Default DIY 02 bugeye FX-R retrofit

50w 4300K FX-Rs (morimoto 50w bulb/ballasts). All sourced from TheRetrofitSource. Older versions from Jan 11 since it took me 9 months to get around to it...

Text and beam picture coming later...

Will not be a full howto, just cover some details I wished I'd known before I started / stupid mistakes not to make etc. IMO can never have too much info floating around on mods like this....

Few outdoor beam patterns. Will take the boring parking lot garage wall ones tomorrow.

Camera settings identical for all pics below. 1/4 @ f4.5, ISO 800, 28mm or 15mm for wider angle shots (1.6x crop body). Picture style "neutral", white balance "daylight".

Stock (taken couple of years ago, with wiring harness (I think) and GE NightHawks)

FX-R Lows - not exactly the same position, but close

FX-R lows, wider angle view

FX-R highs

FX-R lows, backed up down the road a bit

FX-R lows, backed up down the road a bit, wider angle view

FX-R highs, backed up down the road a bit, sorry blurred.

That looks like a quick and dirty way of doing it, did you do something to hide the cast aluminum casing around the actual lens? You see that when you look into the headlight correct?

Also are they still adjustable with factory adjustment screws that way?

Mounting them to the reflector bowl retains factory adjustment, I've done a couple FXRs like this. What isn't shown-and what I'm assuming the OP did is check for rotational alignment before adding the epoxy. Nice job.

Shoot, I knew I forgot something...

Thanks.

Thanks for your various writeups by the way, it all helped me along.

Yes, I've noticed a lot of passing families in the supermarket parking lot peering into my lights and making noises of disapproval. Even one guy driving the other direction on the freeway using binoculars looked unimpressed.

But seriously...

I left the bowl chromed. It's all shiny with lots of reflections in there. Yes you can see around the shroud from one side, but unless you bend over and stare in there, it's not noticable. Most people pay zero attention to headlights on cars, I'd be stunned if anyone could notice it walking by.

Some folks mount it deeper, I chose not to due to (a) concern that I might end up hitting the housing with the projector or bolts and (b) images of something like the below happening in my quest for perfection. Chopping stuff out of the bowl is irreversible so I erred on the side of caution.

Again, I'm intending to share gotchas/mistakes/learnings, not state that this is how I think everyone should do it.

My pleasure. Have you seen the retros I did for my Bugeye front-end conversion? Please post output pics when you can.

Ok actually looking closer at the pics there is a piece that goes over the cast right? And then like you said you can only see it from the side. That clarifies it better, wasn't trying to hate any just checking, I was thinking looking straight in you could see it but if you have to find the right spot just to see it then its good enough for my car

Only the shroud. As mentioned above, nobody is going to notice unless the intentionally peer into the headlight, and only people like us would do that . Leaving the reflector chrome also helps camoflage it with reflections etc. If the bowl was painted, might be a little more obvious. I wanted an inconspicuous look, hence going with chrome.

I should have a chance to do that late tonight. I have some pics of my stock lights as well, will try to stop by the same location to take a comparitive shot.

There is an issue with the bulb or bulb seating in one of them that I've not had a chance to play with (the hotspot isn't in quite the right place), so the output could probably be a little better, but it's already a revelation compared to the stock lights.

Few quick output shots added up in the 3rd post.

Need to find a more representative road...

OP, do you have any more pictures? Maybe of some of the car from further away?

I like the retrofit and the fact they're stock headlights (not a fan of DIY or eBay "black housings")

Yeah, it's been a while. I can try to take a couple.

They're still going strong. No leaks, no problems.

The original TRS wiring harness failed after about a year, replaced with a heavier duty newer TRS harness, working fine.

I know I am years late to the party, but these look great! I am going to go off these for my retrofit, trying to keep my bugeye looking stock and clean, but wanted the better light output of HIDs.

Well done.
