Default 1998 legacy 2.5 swap to 2.2 will it work?

My 1998 Legacy GT with a 2.5 dohc and it spun a rod and I have a chance to buy an 1998 impreza 2.2 sohc can I swap everything over and use the 2.2 with the stock legacy ecu?

If the impreza has EGR, yes you can. EGR usually only came on auto trans 2.2l cars. You also need to use the imp's exhaust header because it has single port heads instead of dual ports like the EJ25. '

If it's an auto, use the 2.5l flexplate on the 2.2l motor.

I agree with the above.

Bumping this because it is very similar to my current project.

I just bought a 1998 Legacy Outback that pitched a rod out the top of the EJ25 DOHC block. I will be removing the EJ22 SOHC engine from my 1999 Impreza L soon, and I want to put this into the Outback.

Both cars are Manual. Is it doable?

Default I just swapped a 95 EJ22 into 99 EJ25 DOHC leg ob car

It was total plug-n-play. My 99 EJ25 dohc leggy started with headgasket leaks and was knocking bad. Couple sets of headgaskets, etc. Out it goes.

The three big plugs on the passenger side of the bellhousing unplug and plug in to the replacement EJ22 from a 95 Legacy auto.

Both had similar EGR plumbing. Both had similar IAC. EJ22 donor car had charcoal can in engine bay, EJ25 recipient car had charcoal can in back bumper. A short piece of hose to close that loop fixed it.

Exhaust bolts up fine. Intakes and heads will not swap between engines.

EJ25 ecu in car seems to be running the EJ22 and all of its sensors just fine. Crank and cam sensors must talk to ecu the same way on donor / recipient cars. If sensors worked differently, car would probably not even run.

Now if only I can sort out the "shift solenoid B" 4EAT code... I'm pretty sure its not related to engine swap...
