Anyone with an ethanol tester, feel free to test and report back. The good news is its not knocking whatsoever. I did reduce timing a few degrees just to be on the safe side though.

Default i want my ethanol

Hey everyone. Just letting you guys know, that is straight pump gas. I too had issues of running rich, but with just returning from a fuel line install and tune at Boost Creep, I figured it was related. Had Solid take a look and they too came to the conclusion based on a 91 pump map that had less than 10 percent trims. I did a ghetto test of my own with a mason jar of water, where you mark a line for the amount of water to start with, and then mark the line to where you'll fill the rest with the fuel source, hoping that the ethanol disassociates with the water, nothing, shook the jar for a good minute, nothing. A fat stack of gas on water, clearly separated. I also took a sample to Holly Refinery in woodscross, they said they would do it Monday. I called Christensen and they said they would look into it today or Monday. Not sure whether we should collaborate on this or what, but I filled my tank, 16 gallons, plus 5 5 gallon jugs, over 120 dollars of supposed e85. I'm sure Christensen will keep this to themselves, so feel please chime in and give them a call.

If that's the case, can't you call the Utah State Measurements and Standards (I think? the guys who validate gas pumps in Utah) and file and complaint? That's pretty messed up if they are selling 91 oct as E85.

Haha, its the Orem Sinclair station. I just called Christensen and was told by a supervisor that he didn't have the time and didn't seem to care to check it today. Told him that he will be responsible if people have any motor damage due to his neglegence. I was going to hit up the BBB and file a complaint if thats how he wants to deal with this. Please call if you guys get a chance today, so that he hears the voice of others.

I'm not well pleased with Christiensen. I have to speculate that possibly they grew tired of everyone hassling them about when the e85 would arrive, so they took it upon themselves to just go ahead and fill it with pump 91 assuming no one would notice.

strange_magic, I feel the same and would speculate exactly. What did they say when you called? He even told me to go to another location, yet all the locations are supplied through them?? I can't wait to get this sample back from Holly Refinery to throw it in their face.

Are you saying your fuel came from the Orem pumps? I thought this issue was just with Layton pumps

From what I hear, Christensen supplies e85 to the Sinclair in Orem and Provo and the Chevron in Clearfield buys it from Christensen. I have no clue about Layton, but if I were you, I'd check it before you pump it.

Mine came from the clearfield chevron. I was not aware of a Layton location. I got the same answer you did. They said they would look into it but didn't seem to concerend overall. I think they are failing to realize some vehicles are not flex fuel.

Layton, clearfeild same thing.

Anyways im pretty sure the signs say flex fuel only on the pumps so they have a reduced liability when it comes to you guys putting it in your cars. They may have some issues as far as advertised weights and measures.

No where does it say on the Orem pump "flex fuel." It says ethanol, e85. When I called, they said there was at least up to 73 percent concentration of ethanol due to altitude. And when I mixed the fuel with water, the level of water didn't change at all, leading me to believe that its straight unleaded fuel, even minus the 10% ethanol typically seen in pump. I mentioned to the supervisor of Christensen that my subaru was specifically tuned for e85 and tried to explain the legistics of it. Guess he failed to connect the dots. If you smell the stuff, it doesn't even smell like ethanol and has a slight yellow hue in color. I'm assuming we aren't the only people dealing with this, I saw a dude in an outback filling up his car too, older model, not the flex fuel type, especially with 3" tips on a dual exhaust.

It is possible that someone made a mistake either filling the truck or the tank at the station. It should NEVER happen though. And yes, the state of Utah should be involved in this situation.

The clearfield station has no such "flex fuel only" either. It just says E85 Ethanol.

What's the solution then? I have this certified test from a refinery labratory coming back hopefully Monday. I can hit up the BBB for Utah tonight with a complaint. Any other suggestions? With the attitude of that supervisor, I think he needs to suck up his pride and learn how to treat his customers that rely on this stuff to be what is advertised, e85.

maybe it was vegas where i saw the flex fuel warnings on the pumps.

as far as 91 goes, it is yellow in color. never looked at e85 for color so im not sure what color it should be. vp is purple. very distinctive. e has a very obvious smell to it. its hard to miss.

look on the pumps. there should be a weights and measures sticker on it and it should have contact info for the issuing agency. contact them as well as the bbb for measures fraud. its a pretty serious issue as that agency regulates everything from the pumps to the deli scales at your grocery.

I filled out a complaint at the BBB and also sent an email to Utah Standards and Measurements. Any other suggestions?

Not really trying to take this to court, just want them to realize that we trust that they are giving the product they advertise for. That we rely on it. If I'm out 120$ for the fuel and the cost to have solid look at it, then so be it, learned a valuable lesson and bought an e85 tester for 13 bucks... Just hope that this type of stuff isn't a reoccuring thing.
