I never thought Hamilton would leave for a team that (IMO) generally has poor reliability. I've noticed a lot of random failures this year on the Merc. Next year should be exciting to see what Hamilton can do with their car!

Perez has some BIG shoes to fill... no pressure.

I'm 100% certain he will do better than Heikki (on average, not necessarily more wins)

Except McLaren will use the same engine.

The fact that Ferrari hadn't signed Perez yet for the 2nd 2013 seat is mind boggling. Can't believe they let him get away.

Speaking of driver signings and such, are there any US based drivers in the F1 pipe line? It would be nice to have a US driver in F1 again.

Surprising move by Hammie.

Don't think it was the wisest choice, but he obviously thinks MB has a chance of winning another championship, either next year or after.

MB still hasn't proven themselves yet as a winning formula (in present day trim), so it's a huge gamble.

MS better get the Ferrari seat. He was driving too well to retire now.

I don't agree with that sentiment, unfortunately. He's made several foolish errors this season and been penalized for it. Incidents in Spain and Singapore come to mind immediately, along with a speeding violation in the pits prior to the Hungarian GP. How many times has he broken his front wing?

This is a young man's sport and I wish he'd retire quietly.

Well, breaking your front wing often comes with being mid-pack. Although I agree he has struggled with the opening corners a times. I think it's simpy a matter of dialing back the aggression, rather than being old.

Regarding your last statement, sorry, I just don't see how you can say that. His pace this year has been better than his teammate's. Who was supposed to be the next big thing. Everyone thought it would take a bit to get back up to speed. But he has.

He has certainly shown that he still has it, despite his age.

I say this never having been a MS fan, at all. Stillnot even a fan. But I think he's earned a place on the grid for sure. Especially this year. Clearly he was more good racing left in him.

I loved reading the news this morning. I had a feeling that despite all the rumors and media speculation, pretty much everyone was going to stay where they are for next year. I'm glad that isn't the case! Racing gets stale when everyone is on the same team year after year.

I'm no Hamilton fan, but I sincerely hope they do well next year. And I'm thrilled that Perez is going to be at McLaren instead of Ferrari. F**k Ferrari. I hope Perez at the very least wins Monza from pole next year!

And as much as I don't like Schumacher, it would have been cool to see him win one last time.

Massa back to Sauber now?

Crazy news! I think this shakes up things a bit, and hopefully with Nico/Hammy at Merc they are able to throw their hat into the ring and compete for wins. Plus I am excited to see Perez get a shot in a top tier car, and without the Alonso cloud around his head when he is ahead of him.

Hammy fans may not be happy, but overall I think this will be good for the action next year.

I am really hoping that Vettel does not go to Ferrari in 2014.

why is that?

is there some trick tech that they have employed? or did they slip the FIA some money to let them get ahead of the curve?

Alexander Rossi was a test driver for Catherham and drove in F-Renault 3.5 this year.

Apparently they have hired a metric ********ton of engineers to work on the engine.

funny

a few weeks ago someone asked Peter Sauber something about Michael Schumacher...Peter Sauber replied he would offer a cockpit to Michael in a heartbeat

but to be honest, I donīt believe that Schumacher will drive for another team. He has had the dream of being the first german World Champion with a german team.

More on that Schumacher to Sauber story:

Quote:
Autosport reported on Friday that Kehm had had talks with Sauber at last weekend's Singapore Grand Prix about Schumacher joining the team.

But Kehm denied this, saying her visit was social.

"It's true I was at Sauber," she said. "I have been there quite often. I have known them for years. But that doesn't mean anything more than I'm regularly there."

Team boss Peter Sauber told the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport in Singapore that he would sign Schumacher "immediately" if he became available.

But a Sauber spokesman said the team would not comment on any of the drivers linked to the team.

There are few other options for Schumacher should he wish to continue racing.

There is a potential opening at Ferrari, but it is thought most likely that Felipe Massa will be retained as Fernando Alonso's team-mate next season.

Williams have a vacancy alongside Pastor Maldonado, but that is likely to be filled by their reserve driver Valtteri Bottas if they do not keep their current second driver Bruno Senna.

Lotus have not confirmed their line-up, but Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean are both under contract and expected to stay.

Force India are expected to continue with rising stars Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg, although the German has been linked with a possible Ferrari move.

It is unlikely Schumacher would consider a role at lower-grid teams Toro Rosso, Caterham, Marussia or HRT, or that any of them could afford to pay him.

I believe it has something to do with them being the Mercedes "factory" team. They'll get to see the Mercedes version of the engine before anyone else does. I don't know that it will be a major leg up, but it's something

I don't think it works like that anymore.

In years past, yes some engine suppliers sold "B-spec" engines to the lower teams, but I'm fairly certain that now, all the teams get the same engines... I could be wrong of course.

In this situation, McLaren will no longer be supplied Merc engines at no cost - they will now have to pay for them. Less money for twittering wannabe rap artists.

What it amounts to is that Mercedes will have a leg up on testing the motor since they designed it. McClaren will get the same spec motor but have to wait to test it until mercedes sells it to them. Not that they'll purposely delay it or anything but Mercedes will have all the data from desgn tests that they won't have to hand over to the other team.

Just how much of an advantage this is...who knows?

It will be a new engine and new ballgame, but based on current assumptions, not much of an advantage:*

Renault engines: Red Bull > Renault ("Lotus")
Mercedes engines: McLaren > Mercedes
Ferrari engines: Ferrari > ok, they don't sell to anyone who can compete with them

*Past performance does not indicate future results, etc.

In other news, COTA released a "prohibited items list" today. Normal stuff for the most part. No booze, explosives, non-folding chairs, weapons, and detachable camera lenses.
