Hulkenberg and di Resta confirmed at Force India
ESPNF1 Staff
December 16, 2011

Force India has finally confirmed that Paul di Restaand Nico Hulkenberg will drive for the team in 2012.

Hulkenberg, who was Force India's reserve driver last year, will replace Adrian Sutil while di Resta will stay on for his second season as a race driver. Team principal Vijay Mallya made the news public the day after the expected deadline and thanked Sutil for his hard work over the past four years.

"I am delighted to present our line-up for the 2012 season. In Paul and Nico we have two extremely talented drivers with tremendous potential," Mallya said. "I think Paul caught the eye of everybody in the pit lane during his rookie season. His speed, maturity and racecraft confirmed that we were right to believe in him and we look forward to working with him again next year. As for Nico, we identified him as a rising star at the end of 2010 and chose to evaluate him during the course of this season. Despite having only limited time in the car, he convinced us that he deserved a race seat for 2012.

"Our new line-up means we say 'goodbye' to Adrian Sutil, who has been with the team since we entered the sport. He has been an integral part of our success over the past four seasons and we wish him well for the future."

Paul Di Resta added: "I'm really looking forward to my second season of Formula One and continuing to grow and develop with Sahara Force India. I've said all along that I love being part of this team: they are ambitious, hungry for success and we work well together. I'm really excited about 2012 and there is a real sense of belief that we can continue to push the top teams and take another step forward. I'd also like to thank the team for all their hard work this year and for all the support they've given me. I'll take some time out over the next few weeks to recharge my batteries and hopefully come back even stronger in 2012."

Nico Hulkenberg said: "I'm obviously delighted to be staying with Sahara Force India and to be given the chance to race next year. It wasn't easy to watch from the sidelines this season, but I did my best to help the team and show what I was capable of. I'm extremely motivated for 2012 and would like to thank everyone for believing in me and giving me this chance. I'm keen to get down to work over the winter to develop our new car and help the team build on this year's achievements. The first test in Jerez can't come soon enough."

And then there were 2 (1 Williams, 1 HRT). No surprise there at FI, though. Shame for Sutil who seemed to deliver quite well the second half of the season.

Damn, that sucks for Sutil. Wonder if he'll end up at Williams? Sucks for him, he had a lot of potential when he entered F1.

Sutil's been with that team for 5 years now right? Time to move on.

The EBD isn't the only thing that makes the RB unbeatable... The flexi wing and the overall packaging of the rear of the rear are second to none on the grid.

Ahh, gotcha. Eh, I think of the axed drivers so far, he's the one who had the best 2011. He was the highest points scorer (9th) to get dropped, beating early podium finishers Heidfeld and Petrov, lets put it that way.

I think it's a shame he never got a podium...came close at Monza in 2009. But, there's only 24 spots available on the grid, and if you don't cut it, you don't cut it.

Hulkenberg's pole in 09 was truly awesome, it was a great thing to see. He deserves to be back in F1.

Merc should've been a contender in 2010 and 2011 given their resources and success in 2009. The BGP01 was a solid car to build from, as obviously the RB5 was. Ferrari and McLaren were waaaaaay behind in 2009, and have since surpassed Merc with ease.

I don't know what the deal is with Merc, but I'm not holding my breathe...
Brawn saved too much money in 09 and didn't develop the car, which hurt the chances of the team in '10. Other than an amazing implementation of a blown diffuser in 2009, the BAR/Honda/Brawn/Merc has not been very successful except for short bursts. Remember that near the end fo the season Button was lucky to get a podium while Red Bull and McLaren were winning every other race. I'm not sure that they'll do much better next year, but they might surprise us too.

He's been in F1 since 2007, and minus a few good drives early on, he hasn't been very amazing at any point. He seems a lot like another Heidfeld, someone who can be in F1 for years but is never going to set the world on fire. I think its fair fi he doesn't get a drive next year so someone else can.

That was kind of my point. McLaren and Ferrari were essentially a year behind Brawn/Merc, and are now least a year ahead in terms of performance and development. They didn't act strongly enough when they had a good car.

Agree 100%. Let's see if Paul and Hulk are as good as they're billed to be.

the thing about sutil is that hamilton considers him someone to watch out for. i guess that's from their gp2 days, but didn't sutil put in a good drive in the rain a couple times?

GP2 success =/= F1 success

Sutil was generally slower than Fisi, and apparently slower than Di Resta...

New bid to bring Formula 1 grand prix back to Argentina
Saturday, December 17th 2011, 10:01 GMT

1996 Argentinian Grand PrixDesigners of a new circuit being constructed in Argentina are aiming for the venue to host the nation's first Formula 1 grand prix since 1998.

The Velociudad Speedcity in Zarate, 100km from Buenos Aires, is being built by Populous, which was behind the recent Silverstone redesign and is also working on an F1-standard circuit in Mumbai.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Velociudad venue took place on Friday, and Populous associate director John Rhodes said the ambition was to attract an F1 grand prix to the track when the full version was finished in 2014.

"The plan is for a circuit capable of delivering a Formula 1 event," he told Reuters. "Once the facility is there, then it's down to a promoter.

"The issue is to have a high performance circuit capable of holding a MotoGP then add the necessary requirements for a Formula 1 race.

"The main 4.7 km circuit will be good for F1 and endurance races like Le Mans, it's a good, sensible length."

MotoGP recently announced that it would return to Argentina in 2013 with an event at the upgraded Rio Hondo track.

Argentina last featured on the F1 calendar from 1995 to 1998, when the world championship raced at the Buenos Aires circuit.

YES!
Those were my best times at the Autodromo de Buenos Aires, being at the Marlboro lounge during the F1s and then pits during MotoGP thanks to Quilmes.

I forgot that Fisi had the measure of Sutil in 2009. My lasting memory of Fisi is under steering into the wall of the parabolica...

Sutil and ET at Williams for 2011. Done deal. Rubens couldn't quite get to 20.

Sutil's drive at Korea last year is one of the worst performances in recent memory. He looked completely out of his element.

Who is ET?

Williams doesn't have any sponsors besides PDVSA and Venezuela though.

I believe thats from karting and lower formulas than GP2, I don't believe they were teammates in GP2.

Sutil did put in some good drives, but over 5 years you need more than a few drives to keep a spot in F1.

They have several other sponsors and partners that are continually running across the bottom of their site too. Ranstad, Rueters, McGreogor...

Well, their sidepods had the car numbers on them, and that usually isn't a good sign. Not to mention they floated the team on the stock market this year.

Edit:

http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/...-in-venezuela/

Proof that Williams is basically hanging on via PDVSA sponsorship.
