That's somewhat disappointing. I still like the BRZ though.

Interesting tidbit from Autoblog this morning...
http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/05/2...-drive-review/

A thorough report on the BRZ...

And conversation about the engine was reported thusly:
Quote:
The engine is an all-new design called the FA, with a perfectly square stroke of 86x86 and a variable-valve control system that Subaru calls AVCS, for active valve control system. The FA was developed for and only used in this car, "at least for the time being." On the required premium gas, Subaru's numbers are 200 horsepower and 150 pound-feet, with reps at a loss to explain why Toyota rates the same engine – that Subaru builds – at 197 horsepower. The FA is smaller than the Impreza's FB engine, achieved with items such as a shorter and lower intake manifold, a shallower bottom on the transmission, and revised, more compact lubrication system. Subaru then placed components in different places to get the engine further back in its bay, like making the intake manifold front-facing and placing the crankshaft 60 mm lower. The induction system was shorted to reduce overhangs, and the radiator was tilted 17 degrees to improve the center of gravity. Compared to the Impreza, the BRZ's engine is placed 120 mm lower and 240 mm further back.

And that's why there's no turbo, and no plans to include one – the engine occupies the space where Subaru would normally bolt one on. They moved so many things around, we don't know why they couldn't have been just as creative with some forced induction, but the company's traditional placement of the intercooler atop the engine simply wouldn't have worked. Subaru plans a longer life-cycle for the car, six to seven years instead of four to five, and it was strongly hinted that we would see a power bump during a mid-cycle refresh – but not a turbocharged bump. We were told as well, though, that this engine will be the base of Subaru's next-generation turbocharged engine.
So... one must then ask... Is the title of this thread correct?

Is it Subaru's new FB Turbo, or will it be Subaru's new FA Turbo motor?

Jalopnik is reporting there is a FA turbo as well... Hmmm
But the slide in LA clearly shows the WRX will have a 2.0 FB turbo.
Wonder if the STI will be a FA turbo? WAIT A MINUTE!!!!

Right now there's an internal discussion wether to go FB or FA for turbo. Both are being looked at. We picked one for the LA show to communicate there will be A turbo on the books.

Impreza FB20 148hp
Impreza STI (engine) (hp)

WRX FB20 (hp)
WRX STI (engine) (hp)

BRZ FA20 205hp
BRZ STI FA20 (hp)

Any guesses on the specs in brackets? Somewhere in there they have to homologate the 1.6 if they want back into WRC...

Which one is the one at the Tokyo auto show that we have photos of?

It looks like a FB motor but with a intake manifold similar to the FA. Is there something else going on with the motor that would designate it as FA, or are all the direct injection modified FB motors just going to be called FA's?

So many comments about homologation, but I really don't see them getting back into the WRC any time soon.

They still haven't decided? How long are they going to stretch out the current models that are already on their 5th year?

If it's an FA turbo I'm in.

Direct injection is a must for me at this point. I'm probably going to buy the wife a 2012 Impreza, but for me, if I'm getting a WRX, it will have to be direct injection.

I like the current models a lot. The problem is that there's already a newer designed Impreza with improvements. I know they are making a "separate" platform for the WRX/STi, but I'm not buying a WRX until I see similar improvements compared to the 2012 Impreza (I'm not talking design).

That being said, it's really hard for me to not buy a 2011-12 WRX. But there are other cars on the market around the same price that are really nice. The AWD has me wanting a Scoob, but I'm content to wait and see what Subaru does with the WRX.

Don't the port injectors help clean the intake valves? I've heard of bad carbon buildup on DI VW/Audi ports/valves.

Pardon my confusion gentlemen but I am lost. What is the difference between FA and FB engines? Why would Subaru be struggling about picking one?

These exact photos. One is a very close up of the turbo. Other images were taken from different angles.

Most likely.. it may also help with start-up enrichening.. which is where HPFPs (which see their highest pressures at cold start-up) seem to begin failing.

I admit I forgot about the more compact nature of FB/FA motors. Anyway I totally like the front mounted turbo. I just hope there would be enough space to cram GT30R sized twinscroll snail
good luck spooling that 30R with a 1.6L before 5k rpm, with direct injection and 1.6l they can still make 300hp no problem, but i bet its going to be on a smaller turbo then the ones currently being run in the wrx/sti.

I doubt Subaru is still trying to make a decision to turbo either the FA or FB. If they want to introduce that engine for MY14 or even 15 reliability testing should already have commenced. I doubt they will only run both engines on the the bench to define which one meets requirements best.

what is the purpose of being able to unbolt the ~3inch section between the oilpan and block???? is this so you can remove and install pistons and rods with out the need to split the block?
