Question 2012 STI - Tranny generally noisy?

Hey guys,

Just have a Subaru-noob question. Just got a 2012 STI and definitely love the car, having only ever owned Hondas/Acuras, I love that it feels just as tight (if not tighter in this casE) -- but a few of the noises are foreign to me.

Of note, there are two things that I'm noticing, and was hopeful some of you could confirm:
  • Good grief are the first and second gears ever noisy. It sounds almost like my Hondas did in reverse. This normal?
  • When I'm coasting to a stop, I'll stick her in neutral, clutch out (e.g., foot is on the deadpedal). Sometimes I'll hear a lasting transmission noise after having rolled to a stop that fades after a few seconds. Like a 'rng rng rng rng rng' and it just fades away. Sounding crazy?

In any case, thanks for your input. Great forum btw.

Still in break-in period, can't wait to open it up a bit.

Thanks.
Alex

Welcome and congrats on your new car!

Yea, the transmission is a bit loud (I did Group N mounts and hardened bushings and it's OMG louder than stock). Check your tires PSI. If the dealer didn't set it properly there can be a large differential between front and rear and that can contribute to the noise.

Fill out your profile with your car and general location (like at least state) so that people can help you when you post.

Also, this would have been better posted in the Newbie section. Make sure you post in the right sections on NASIOC and make sure to search first prior to asking questions that may have been asked 1,0000000000 times before.

Thanks. I did search, wasn't sure -- this seemed like the spot for creaks and noises!

I'll check everything you just mentioned

It's the price you pay for a sweet transmission, you get some gear whine when slowing down.

It's totally normal.

So the answer is....just don't slow down (j/k)!!

Welcome to the forum. 99% of the info and people on here are great. There are also folks from dealerships that post and they are uber helpful. Just one suggestion? Stay out of OT! At least until your ready to give back what they give out!

Congrats on the car - - once in a Suby - - (I've been driving them for almost 15 years..)

STI tranny is noisy. Be glad it's loud, because it's pretty strong. If it was quiet, I'd worry about the time bomb, and when it'll blow up!

If you get shifter bushings(if it's like any of the other sti's I've driven, you want them) it'll be even louder. Eventually, you'll get used to it.

Pretty strong? They are extremely strong, but everyone is right, the STI although a little noisy has a long track record of having an extremely durable transmission. We had a local guy that was running 800 WHP on a stock tranny.

I'd believe it. My old tuning shop in WA said he's tuned a a ton of STI's to well over 400whp with stock trani's and no issues.

i can't speak specific to 2012 sti's, but in my experience with my 03 wrx and 03 evo, these cars generally have more drivetrain thrash than a honda...

I've got a Q300 cat back on my sedan and I still clearly hear my transmission in lower gears. Your "symptoms" sound like a normal, happy STi transmission.

I'd say its partially due to you being used to a FWD car, which has the trans up in the front next to the engine. RWD cars have the trans right next to your right leg, so you can hear them a bit more. Subarus have the trans and transfer case right next to you so you are definitely going to hear it a lot more.

I actually like the mechanical sounds coming from the drivetrain. I agree it doesn't sound normal, but you'll get used to it.

I get a whine the loudest when I'm in 5th gear and under 2500 rpm. Otherwise it's really not that bad.
