Default 02 WRX tranny random ticking question

i have an 02 wrx. When under load in say 2-4 gears, i can hear a light ticking, NOT in tune with RPMs. It cuts in an out under load and is random. Similar to a solenoid sound kicking in and out randomly but fast. Is there a solenoid on the tranny or anywere under there in the area. Its no the engine or any were in the bay. i can hear it near the shifter.

my 02 wrx started made a ticking sound then a loud rattle then i had no third gear, that all happened within a 4 mile car ride while babying it. i would take it to a mechanic and have them double check where its coming from and then go from there. i had no signs that mine was going bad no grinds or weird noises just a click click clack boom

Bumping this up because I have a similar sound. Ticking noise only in 2-5 and only under load at low RPM's. Sound is speed dependent, not RPM's. There don't seem to be any other symptoms. I cannot recreate the sound in neutral, or with the clutch pressed in, or in 1st gear.

This advice is still your best 1st step. I'd be looking for bits of bearing in the fluid & on the magnet.

Mine has ticked for 60k+ miles. I've changed fluid on a regular basis, and have never had more than just a hint of sludge on the magnet. No particles of any size at all, it felt like mud more than anything else.
