Default New Type R1 WRX at Subaru City

While over getting my Turbo attended too, I got a chance to look at the 03 Type R1 WRX's that just arrived that day. They had 3 on the lot, 1 sedan and 2 wagons. They were all the same color, which was some kind of yellow/gold color (darker than last years pale yellow, but still not a nice looking yellow IMHO).

Seems the only difference between the 02 WRX and the Type R1 03's are as follows:

1. Comes with a second set of wheels; 1 set of 16's with crappy RE-92's and 1 set of 17's with BBS wheels and Pole position S03's (they look nice by the way).

2. Shifter knob is MOMO

3. Type R1 decal at the back.

Other than that, everything else looked the same. I did'nt get to look under the hood, but the head servie guy told me it was alll the same.

If you go over there today or early next week, you might get a look.

Darrell

At Centaur Subaru at Calgary, I saw at LEAST 5 of them. I think three sedans, two wagons, not sure tho.

I don't like the yellow.....

What hype!!!!!

For less than $3000 I could buy a better set of wheels, a better set of tires, a momo shift knob and I prefer a debadged rearend anyway.

I guess in the scheme of things, your paying an extra $1000+ for the fancy color and exclusivity factor when you price your own set of wheels/tires into it.

If they really wanted to impress us "Car Geeks", they would make the car in the same vein as the Porsche GT2/GT3's, ITR's and CTR's, which are stripped vehicles with minimal amenities, lighter weight, and better mechanicals.

Let's play a game here and maybe SOC can see what the real performance minded people think this car should be.

Here's my list for the ideal "Type R1" Impreza

Exclusive colour ==> Good Job FHI!!
Different Wing - Bigger is Better
Adjustable Centre Diff & Limited Slip F&R Diffs
250+ HP
Better Seats ==> WRX seats are good, but I'd like better
A bullet Proof 6-Speed Tranny - not this fragile tranny that enthusiasts have had to put up with for years.
Better Brakes - 4 pots up front, 2 pots in the back
Lose 150+ lbs ==> I don't care how (Remove ==> sound deadening, side air bags, etc.)
Improve that horendous ABS computer!!!!
Keep it under $45k
By the time you put all the taxes and other crap into it, it would probably be around $52k. Although pricey, for a car with the goodies I mentioned above, it would still be a performance bargain.

Cheers,
MB

You also get the STi Short shift kit...Headlight covers. If you price that up...its not bad for 38K

17 BBS wheels
17" Bridgestone s02 tires
sti short shift kit
momo shift knob
foglight covers
NASTY yellow

for the price...I think its not that bad of a deal....just ugly though...

It's yellow, so it has to be faster right?

Actually the color reminds me of the Crapalier

Darell if you're talking about subaru city in E-town I was just over there today for my 6000 km service and saw the specR1 sedan. Looks nice, good wheels and shifter and it had leather seats too. Didn't notice anything different other than wheels seats shifter and badging. But I only saw it for about 20 seconds. I'm going back tomorrow to ask about something I hope it's still there.

Question

I understood, speaking with Methodius B. that the leather seats were done 3rd party just for that customer.

Also, did you folks know that both Subaru City and Rally Subaru on 34th Avenue are owned by the same principals? Hmmm...

Seats must have been custom as the the one I looked at had identical seats to my rex. The wheels kinda look like Rota Tarmacs (whatever they are a knock off of). Also, I did not see fog light covers, but I priced these out while at Subaru City and they were over $500 for the pair.

Obviously with pricing like that, they must be very committed in attracting the performance enthusiast

Default Pics of the R1

Hey guys,
I dropped by Subaru city to pick up an oil filter, and i took some pics of the 2 R1's that were left. All 5 of them were sold long before they were shipped to the dealer.

Here are the pics: (hope they work)

As u can see, nothing REALLY special. MSRP is a tad over $40,000.

Here's a link to my album: ImageStation

Also, 1 or 2 of the R1's were broken into, a set of stock WRX rims were stolen as well as the back seat in a sedan. So it was probably somebody wanting to replace some stock parts.
Keep a look out for anybody selling stock WRX rims and rear seat out of now where.

i'm very surprised that ppl are buying the specR1...

i think it's a total rip-off...

5k more for those rims, a knob, and some "specR1" badging...**** that!!

You're also paying for a limited edition vehicle. Something very few people out there will have. It might be worth something some day........who knows.....

The price difference between the R1 and a WRX is just the mark up from all the additions that the R1 has. Well, that's what i think. Like Inpreza Kid said, the BBS rims and S-03s are alone 3k or more even. The badging is cool, but i'm not into the yellow...let's stay w/ the old metallic colors.
