Better late than never, right?

We're now on the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the luxury sedan that kicked off the whole "four-door coupe" craze. Since then, Volkswagen countered with the CC, Porsche launched the Panamera, and Audi won us over with its A7. So what about BMW? Now that the big 6 Series coupe has taken hold, the German automaker has added a proper back seat and two additional doors to create this, the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe.

The first version of the Gran Coupe to arrive Stateside will be the 640i, powered by BMW's N55 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six, good for 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque in this application. Shortly thereafter, the 650i Gran Coupe will arrive, available with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, boasting a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 tuned to 445 hp and 480 lb-ft. Both engines are paired with BMW's ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission.

Compared to its two-door counterpart, the Gran Coupe is a full 4.4 inches longer, and most of that added length benefits the rear passengers. BMW's literature states that the stretched 6 Series has a 4+1 seating configuration, meaning there's actually a quasi-usable seat between the two outboard rear positions. (Good luck.) Judging from the photos, the Gran Coupe's interior is as luxuriously appointed and tech-laden as the rest of the 6 Series range – if not a little bit moreso.

We originally thought that BMW would debut the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe at next month's Detroit Auto Show, but since the all-new 2012 3 Series is expected to make its public debut at Cobo Hall, we think BMW may hold off on the official Gran Coupe introduction until the Geneva Motor Show in March. We'll likely know official pricing details around that time, too. For now, soak it up in our high-res gallery and follow the jump to read the full details in BMW's press blast.

UPDATE: Well over 100 new photos added to our high-res gallery. To see a video of the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe in action and take part in our poll, click here.

For some reason I actually really like this car. That's one hell of an interior.

What is the difference between this and a 5 and 7 series.. They seem waaay to close together, but yeah, that interior is pure bliss.

It's a good looking car of course the interior is "BMW Individual" so that is a $7k option on the 7 series. The thing is while I like it is there room for it between the 5 series and 7 series? It's not as swoopy as a CLS or a hatchback like an A7 or Panamera. Unless you need 5 seats I'd think you would take this over a 5.

Agreed.

Just not sure how many people would sacrifice the 5th seat option and better headroom in the 5-series when the 6 GC isn't as aggressively styled as its segment-mates.

Likely to me another 'swing-and-a-miss' for BMW, which makes for quite a few recently:

5 GT
X6
Z4coupe

Nice package of features in this car, but I'd rather take an M3 in that colour with the same/similar interior.

yeah, but in all fairness, the Z4 coupe is beautiful. None of the other ones are not.

If I was in the market to buy a 7 series I would buy this instead.

If I was in the market for a 4-Door Coupe I would by the CLS.

It looks nice, but if it were just one solid color, it really doesn't look that different from the 5-Series (other than the shape of the rear seats of course). I rode in my boss's 2011 550i today to lunch, and the interior looks a lot like this one, except in black Nappa leather. But I do think that the dashboard in this one has slightly curvier surfaces with leather upholstery on top, which I don't think my boss's car has.

The current CLS? I think this one is nicer than that. The current one is just a huge mess with all of the different shapes and lights inside lights. The original CLS is for sure more handsome than this one.

Agreed.

Used to not care about interiors, but as I grow older I find that I want a car with a nice interior as much as a car with good performance.

The interior, especially with the individual treatment, is very nice. No argument there.

But the exterior just isn't coupy enough. I think in order to sell this whole 4 door coupe thing, you have to make a bold statement with the exterior. Maybe a 4 door will never look like a true coupe, but at least you have to make it look NOT like a sedan. You may or may not like the A7 or the CLS, but neither looks like an A6/E-class with a squished roof. I feel that BMW failed on this front completely. I suspect that the reason they went for the BMW individual interior is because they realize the exterior is not striking enough for the car's intended purpose.

Very much so, which speaks more for the Regal. Of course when you consider the Regal is the Opel Insignia...

I agree -- just looking at the side profile shows that while the roof is a bit swoopy, by the time it reaches the C-pillar and trunk, it looks like a typical sedan and doesn't really distinguish itself much, basically almost looking like a 5-Series with 6-Series headlights and taillights put on it.

The interior is really nice, but again, it reminds me too much of the 5-Series. This one has nicer seats and leather all over the place (whereas the 5-Series has some soft plastics in certain areas like the dashboard).
