Default Auto-X next Sunday-need newb tips

I am going to try auto-x next week. I met a guy who races his BMW pretty seriously. I have a couple of questions.

When do I have to register by?

I only have 1 mod, a unichip. What class will I be in?

I still have the re-92's, and I am considreing some new tires. Especially if I wind up in a modified class.

I don't expect to be very competitive, I can barely drag race . If you have any driving tips I would appreciate hearing them.

What is the chance of rolling my car? Have you ever seen a crash?

Thanks in advance.

Dennis

Well, registration is done at http://www.rmsolo.org/reg.html and must happen at least 2 days before the event (I think it closes something like 10AM this Friday).

I am not 100% sure on class, but if the unichip doesn't do anything with boost than you would want to be in STX (street tires only, coilovers, engine mananagement allowed, no boost alteration allowed). If the unichip does change the boost characteristics, I think you would have to run in SM (street modified- almost anything including engine swaps and more boost allowed, race tires allowed). You may find yourself in between a rock and a hard place if you have altreed boost and still run RE-92s, but you will be much happier when you get rid of the stock tires, anyway. If you want to be competitive in SM, you would probably want Autocross tires like the Hoosier AS303.

Driving tips? Um, I guess the usual stuff like go slow to go fast, etc. Autocross is something that you tend to get better at as time progresses. Oh, and try to ride with other people (hopefully before you run). You are allowed to ride along with someone else before you run in your first year of autocrossing.

As far as rollovers, I have never seen that happen in person. I did see footage of somebody autocrossing at a road course and ran off into the dirt while going at about 12/10ths. It would be really hard to roll a car unless you get a tire failure or some other catastrophic suspension failure (which could cause you to roll on the highway, anyway).

while you're on rmsolo.org read the "getting started" section. Some very good information in the write-ups they have.

Above all, just have fun at the event. That's what it's all about!

Good advice from Keith and Ro. If I may add a snippet of info. Stop by a gas station on the way to the event and put 47lbs in your front tires and 44 in the rear. This will help the tires somewhat from rolling over onto the sidewalls, RE92s are that bad. Plus this will help with turn in and get the car to rotate a bit.

Thanks for the advice

...but I don't think that I want to get eaten alive by the monsters that I know are going to be in the street modified class. On the other hand, I can't quite make up my mind...I guess I have a couple of days to give it some thought. My BMW driving friend did mention a ride along so I will be there for sure.

I will try to keep an eye out for you, so I can introduce myself.

WR,
Bring your car and run. Nobody is fast their first time out. Run STX, nobody will have an issue with your chip. Plus, its a street tire class. Look for me when you get there and I'll help you get situated. I have a black '98 RS (STS 12) with the stock gold wheels and a V5 wing (no, it doesn't do anything, but it looks cool).

You're right Tangmere, I might as well run. I will register either tonight or tomorrow. I will be sure to look for you. The people I am going to caravan with mentioned getting there early.

Thanks for all the advice.

Hey, WRBlue,

Good to hear of another joining in the fun. Wish I was going to be able to make it, but I'm gonna have to pass this one. Looking forward to meeting you at the September one.

Mark's advice on the tires is, of course, right-on; the RE-92s need all the help they can get! Get your braking done early, and smoothly power out of the corners-the RE-92s, and the WRX are at their worst if you get into a corner way too hot- terminal understeer, lots of tire squeal, and slow times (been there, done that).

Getting there early is a very good idea for a number of reasons, including plenty of time to walk the course a number of times. Another really helpful thing, running N(ovice) is being able to ride w/ folk before you run. Its one thing to see the course walking, its another to see it at speed. Depending on how the run groups work out, it would be really nice to get a ride in another Rex (talk to the DS guys), or next best in an RS.....

Of course, bring plenty of water/suncreen, and have fun.
