Default 5th gear SLAM!?!

Hello!

I'm driving a 2000 Legacy Twin Turbo (Japan) and I've been having a super weird problem lately.

It has 67K miles and no other apparent problems. Once in a while, cruising on the highway in 5th gear, as the first turbo begins to kick in, there will be a HUGE slam, as if I'm just kicking the clutch really fast. After that studder/halt/jolt, it keeps going, and there are no problems after that. Seems to happen at any throttle input level, around 3K RPM.

It doesn't happen in any other gears, only in 5th. I bouight the car around 60K miles and it seems to have been well-maintained, timing belt is done, etc. Don't really know about the spark plugs, but this most likely isn't the spark plugs because it's so drastic and sudden and violent.

Any advice or input would be appreciated!

You should really ask this in a forum where there are people more familiar with your powertrain. This being a North American board there won't be many of those here.
Try the International forum, or one of the overseas-based ones.

Sounds almost like you're over boosting. It's not accompanied with a CEL is it? That kick would be the computer stepping in to cut boost. I had a similar issue with my Cobb stage 1 OTS map, I'd be cruising along at 90mph or so (please don't crucify me NASIOC) and I'd mat it and it would kick throw a code and disable my cruise control and TCS. I ended up selling the AP and I'm going to a tuner when I go stage 2.

There are no CELs accompanying it...so perhaps it is a bad coil or something. Tried again the other day and it didn't happen again, so it seems quite tempermental. Does that sounds like it could be a coil?

Maybe. My issue was temperature dependent with colder causing more problems. I would get a misfire cel though, but it goes away after flashing a couple times. It happened at the onset of boost around 3k rpm, before and after that it was fine. Go to autozone and check for stored codes maybe?

Nimbus,
Did your problem happen in every gear, or just one?
Yeah, for me, it doesn't appear so dependent on temperature. It's really random, but the times when it's happening, it happens every time i pass about 3K RPM in 5th. Try the car another day and it's all fine. It's only happened like 2 or 3 times before this in the last 16 months of owning the car.

It happened in higher gears. If I remember correctly, it was 3rd, 4th and didn't try 5th since I took it to the dealer immediately. Maybe mine was in worse shape than yours currently is. The stutter is very noticeable and I clearly remember wondering if this was hurting my transmission because it seemed pretty violent.

Lol, didn't realize you're in Japan. Dunno if they have autozones there haha.

Either way, if it is a bad coil, you WILL get a misfire cel the instant it happens. This will go away after flashing a couple of times, at least for my 09. If you don't experience this, chances are it won't be a bad coil.

sounds like it's compressor surge. I come across the same issue in 5-6th gear .It occurs more frequently in larger turbos when temps are low and the air is dense. from what i know, it's fairly cold in jp right now, right?

Communik,
Yeah, it's been snowing recently, and on the day that it was happening, it was just below freezing. If it's compressor surge, what do you suggest I do?

I suggest laying off full boost in 5-6 gears for now. My tuner said you can't really tune around it. If you were to tune for the freezing temps now, your car would not react the same when normal temps return.
