Did the HG's at 88k due to external leaking and wanting to get that taken care of before it got any worse. This analysis was to confirm the HG job went well and things were buttoned up tight, and also to get a feel for how she was wearing as i close in on 100k. i refilled with PP as i have been, and will try to run this fill out to more than 7k miles to see how it fares.

this sample was run during the summer and fall months and i did a 1,000 mile road trip through some mountains with some large grades and lots of engine braking which is where i think the oil consumption came from. i'll be checking the PCV valve anyway and keeping an eye on that.

this was with a Purolator gold filter.

PP is a great BFTB oil. I've run it in my '07 Legacy 2.5i (6K mile OCI's) since its first oil change and wear is excellent at 70K miles. Zero consumption.

Wow, it sheared a bit and that's with 2 quarts of make-up oil.

Otherwise, it probably would have sheared more. With that much consumption, I would probably try switching to Pennzoil Conventional (PYB) or Pennzoil Conventional High Mileage. Not sure about the HM, but the regular Pennzoil has a nice shot of moly. Compare these additive levels to your uoa: http://www.pqiamerica.com/Pennzoil.htm I would even just use the conventional as make-up oil. Usually, High Mileage oils have a thicker viscosity.

I'm guessing the silicon is from when you had the HG's replaced (oh, now I see their comment). Of course TBN is good because of the two quarts of make-up oil. If your consumption doesn't improve I would probably switch to PYB 10W-40 if there are no mechanical problems found. Your car allows for it down to -4F.

What oil and filters were used for the previous uoa's? Nice improvement in insolubles in this run!

its been PP 5W-30 and Purolator PureOne gold filters across the board.

i filled up again with the same except i'm using a blue OEM filter this time. if consumption doesn't go back to normal, i'll start looking at a change in viscosity. thanks for the comments.

+1 on High Mileage oil if the consumption continues. Pennzoil HM was just barely a 30wt after 2k miles in my WRX. See my UOAs here- the 5,463 mile change was PHM 5w30.

Another option is Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic, it's ACEA A3.
