I'm a big proponent of "if at first you don't succeed ..."

sounds like a plan.

the rock looks perfect and as you can see the alpine terrain is probably endless.

Thats a good one, saw that elsewhere yesterday. Still staring.

I think I just decided to go ice climb in Cody, WY soon. Anybody been? (Probably a question for supertopo I know, but I hate that goddamn forum. Been searching around, but wondering if anyone here's been there).

Waiting on my Mont Blancs to show up. Freaking awesome boots but needed a half size down.

Stupertopo has much good but it also has sooooo much bad. That's why I don't really participate there. There's also some stuff for Cody on Mountainproject.

Any of you guys hiked/climbed in the Balkans? I caught the last half of a show on the wildlife in that region (Eastern Europe) and was absolutely blown away. The thought of traveling to that part of the world has never crossed my mind but now I can't shake it.

I don't think I'm looking for specific answers, as I don't yet have specific questions, but what do you know about the region? Opinions on making this my first destination trek?

My areas of interest would be Skadar Lake in Albania/Montenegro.

Then a trip Northeast to Sutjeska National Park in Montenegro/Bosnia.

I was looking into Slovenia las year, never made it, hoping for a trip in the near future. The whole area and surrounds all looked awesome, looks like killer limestone everywhere, seems easy enough to travel, not hugely expensive, heard the people are really nice. Theres a guy on supertopo called borut who is from Slovenia, he might be able to tell you something about Albania. Got the Rough guide for Slovenia, seems real good, try that or a cicerone guide, they do mountain guidebooks for all the doms and trail systems and stuff.

IIRC, you can make a trip of the whole area pretty well, as the size is tiny compared with us in the US.

Supertopo is the site I was looking for this morning, thanks for helping with something you didn't even mean to!

Good call on those guide books too. This should be enough to get me going. I don't typically do the whole new year's resolution thing, but maybe this should be something to work towards.

Edit: Doh, Supertopo isn't the site I was looking for. I was linked to the site that I was hoping that was the other day and it had 'topo' in the URL. It was a forum that looked to cover a bunch of 'adventurers" travels around the world.

I have not, but... it looks pretty sick.

The logistics of your first destination trek.... hrmmmm. I think the biggest obstacles would be procuring food, and fuel when you get there.

go do it. what pack do you have btw?

This is in the very, very early stages and realistically, I don't think I'd even be able to make it next year. 'tis nice to dream though.

I have a Gregory Baltoro 70.

Try mountainproject.com or summitpost.com, but if you can find the user called Borut on supertopo, he would hook you up, he's always been generous with info and lives in Slovenia. Im sure hes familiar with the Balkans and other areas youre looking for.

For the record I loathe supertopo, but occasionally you can score good info there.

I found both the cicerone guide and rough guide on amazon.

2013 is for getting strong again. Hopefully heading to Hueco again in late January early Feb. If not just for the steaks at Cattlemans.
