Default MEET: 2012 CSCC/SCCA Auto Cross Season

The California Sports Car Club, CSCC, 2012 Auto Cross/SOLO season starts up on Saturday, January the 21st, with a PRACTICE, followed on Sunday the 22nd with our first Championship Race of the year. Typically we have 12 to 13 events, monthly, that count towards our yearly Championships ... in the various Sports Car Club of America, SCCA Classes, plus a number of local classes which cover pretty much any vehicle that isn't too tall.

Here is the Link for Sundays Race Day Flyer:
http://tinyurl.com/85a4spo

Here are a couple of Video Links which show you what Auto Cross, now called SOLO racing, is all about. Basically it allows one to drive ones car flat out, but at no more then highway speeds, in a SAFE Environment, ie. you can spin out without hitting anything (as long as you don't keep your foot in it so that you continue to travel away from the course. If you spin out or have a BIG slide, your run is basically ruined anyway, so no sense in trying to save it.)

In a few days I will post a Link to the PRACTICE event on Saturday the 21st.

But note that it is sometimes difficult to get into the Practice events, because often CSCC members get first choice.

It's inexpensive and easy to join the CSCC so that one can get preferential treatment, plus you can then get a permanent number, ie. you can have magnetic numbers made up so you don't have to make trashy looking tape numbers at the event.

See http://www.solo2.com/ ... and the Newbie Guide on the right hand side, including how to join.

Note that on the Sunday Race Days, you now get 4 Time Runs plus you can buy 4 more X-Runs. We often don't want to run more then that many runs so that we don't use up our tires.

You can choose to run in a Class, and note that there is a Novice Championship Class, using a car for any of our different catagories, OR, you can run Time Only runs, ie. no points in a particular class, but your Times are recorded ... just as they are if you add X-Runs.

We have many Instructors, including National Champions. For runs that don't count towards a Championship, you can take passengers. YOU can also take rides, which is one of the BEST ways to learn. You can have Instructors ride along, but the best thing is to often have an Instructor do a run in your car, so you can see what it's capable of. This gives you a time to chase and it gives you confidence that your car is capable of a given time.

CA Speedway, Fontana ... where we run in the winter months:

Questions ... PM or email me, or post them on our Message Board:

http://forums.solo2.com/

Note that there is also a LOT of info to be gotten from NASIOC's own Auto Cross message board ... including the SCCA rules:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=188

(note that besides the SCCA classes, we have a few additional Run-What-You-Brung classes, and very popular Stock car classes, but running with Street Tires instead of "R" tires.)

It's a good idea to come out and get in the swing of it before you buy your BRZ as you'll definitely want to autocross that!

First stop before doing a Track Day with your sports car/sedan should be an Auto Cross. Learn about your cars at the limit handling in a safe environment.

Default auto cross crash

Though it is few and far between, idiots can still manage to crash at an auto cross event.

Driving on the street to get to an autocross is more dangerous than actually autocrossing.

That link doesn't work.

Thanks for your helpful post.

@ oem ... link doesn't work, but if you are referring to the recent C6 Vette Auto Cross crash ... slid heavily into a curb ... NOTE that that wasn't a SCCA event! WE have very strict Safety Rules on Course Layout, and we have a mandatory Safety Steward, who has the final word on Course Layout.

The Vette accident occurred on a relatively small in-field lot at CA Speedway ... We use the huge, much more expensive to rent, Green Lot ... which also doesn't have any curbs.

Even we CAN have incidents, but they invariable occur when someone, typically an overly "enthusiastic" newbie, refuses to give it up after a big slide or spin. Sure, if you keep your foot in it, you WILL eventually arrive at something unforgiving! Our Motto is, "Two Feet In" when you slide or spin. You will come to a very quick stop when you engage both clutch and brake. Putting in the Clutch can also save your engine when the car is backwards ... while still traveling forward. This is also a good lesson when you're on a proper road track.

I finally saw the video of that Vette crashing. Yah ... not enough run-off room between course and that curb for the driver to escape. Slaloms are often one of the fastest part of the course and one MUST have enough room. There are NO Curbs in the lots that we use.

The first video in the first post in this thread shows the Green Lot that we use at CA Speedway.

Remember to SIGN UP ASAP ... otherwise the Practice is going to fill up with our regulars.

Sunday's Race day ... 4 "race" runs and 4 X-Runs is ALWAYS open!

Tom - I have slight complications in that I'm about to acquire a woman and a seven year old son and they don't come cheap! That said, I might buy one as a daily and then see where they class it in ST*. I just don't see it being a top dog in STR, but I think STX might work well.

I'll drive yours first to see how it feels

It's actually one of the few (affordable) cars that I'm excited about, but would probably want to wait for the STI version. (Is the BRZ charged?) At least I talked Karen out of getting another (used) Vette today. We might like to get a used Cayman S, but having driven Hi's, although they are very nice, they seem to lack "soul." Of course a more opened exhaust and a stiffer set-up would take care of that!

Tom, are we going to see you at the January event?

After every event I get at least one message saying, "Man, I wish I hadn't missed this thread!"

So hopefully I've posted it early enough to catch "that person's" attention

Great, did you sign up for the Practice? You'll want to meet Max ... BlkWRXWag ... he's a National SCCA Solo Champ ... from when he raced his STI!

And the newbie, first event stuff here:

... and lots of good info on the ex-Team Blew site:

And only 0.157 seconds from winning one in a MX5 this year, not that I will let that number haunt me for the rest of my days!
