Default PCV trends on high mileage engine question

I am curious about those with high mileage engines, the condition of the PCV system. In particular, those running boost (factory or not). Does any one regularly take leak downs to measure ring seal deterioration? What about any other kind of inspection?

I am moved towards buying a catch can as I periodically check the PCV hose connection to the compressor inlet pipe and note the degree of condensation (oil and oil vapor residue). Is there a point where it gets particularly bad and actually starts to promote detonation on accel? At what mileage do any negative symptoms actually manifest themselves?

Also, I read a thread where someone used a catch can from spomotosports.com and provided pics. I noted that the hose schematic still provides a connection between the inlet hose and one of the pcv hoses....is that connection necessary? Why didn't he just block it off?
