Question Any interest in a 3/16" aluminum skidplate for Legacys?

As some of you know, I make skidplates for GC8's and GDA's in high quality 3/16" thk aluminum. I've sold quite a few to the Impreza crowd, and I'm wondering if theres an interest for Legacy owners. I know you Outback guys might need some!!

The ones I make for the WRX are pretty large and robust, and go for around $150 US. I think that Legacy ones might be pretty similar in size.

Hiroki Tada is in the process of making me a cardboard prototype/template, and once its done, I can start production!

I just wanted to see if theres any interest, maybe for a little group buy, if you guys want. I'd probably need 6-8 people for these.

Also, if Hiroki is too lazy to make this prototype, if anyone's bored, take a peice of carboard and try to make up a simple skidplate (try to keep the cuts straight, and with minimal or non-complex bends, etc..), feel free to do so! Or you can just send me drawings.

An example of my work can be seen here www.electronmetal.ca/page1.html

I havent seen the underside of a Legacy...hopefully I can make something that wont interfere with the stock headers...

Thanks!

Primitive Racing already makes a large skidplate for the Legacy (both modern and BC-BF flavors). I have the 3/16" version on my '92 turbo. The only complaint is that (at least on my car) the oil-pan rattles against the bottom and it was a little awkward to bolt-on. Otherwise, it has a LOT of underside coverage.

Yup! I've seen the Primitive ones and I must say they look pretty good!

But, they are a little pricey at $235 each!

I can pretty much assure the same amout of protection, with a cost about $100 cheaper

Well, if you guys are interested! Just lemme know

If so, I'll take two.

I would also be interested... Broke mine last year, plastic does not like chunks of ice, and the dealer saw me coming for replacement.

Is there any noise difference with your skid plate, I noticed that without the plastic "tub" around the bottom of the engine, I could hear a lot more "stuff" going on.

Thanks

P.S. If you need help in the template area, I have a digicam..

The WRX motor is actually more compact than the regular 2.5, so it shouldnt be a problem. The turbo headers (as long as theyre the stock ones) are WAY smaller and more compact then the larger 2.5 ones.

Hrm....I didnt think that it would make much of a difference, but I'd have to assume that the aluminum would block out the noises from underneath the engine. Either that, or it would magnify whats going on in the engine bay, cause it'll be more 'sealed in'.

I've sold plenty of them to WRX owners, and I havent heard a single comlaint about noise (or anything else, for that matter), so I dont think it would be much of an issue...

Hrm....now my only problem is the different years/styles of Legacys

I know Imprezas go from GC8 (93-01) and GDA (02+) platforms

but how about Legacys? Each Legacy model is going to have a different style of plate. I'm going to have to design and test each one.

Can someone please post the styles/years of Legacy's? Thanks

(FYI-- I think the GC8 plate fits early 90's Legacy's )

Heh I need to flex those autocad skills that I learned in froshmen year.

Hey Goose, I think there is a "run down" of models in the FAQ sticky above. And from my understanding, the wagons and sedans are identical underneath the front. aside from the Outbacks maybe.

Basically, the Years for Sedan/Wagon go:

90-94 BC/BF
95-99 BD/BG
00-02+ BE/BH

Thank you sir

Hiroki, go flex dem AutoCAD skills! Still, its best to make that cardboard mockup, just to see how it fits in the real world.

I'd still need drawings/mockups for the BC/BD models....unless one size fits all

have you tried fitting an impreza plate to the legacy and drilling different mounting holes? unless the plate is bent or very large, it should fit..

My thoughts are with froggert on this one. I think there needs to be some test fitment before you have to go all out making new ones as much GC8 stuff fits ours. The '00+ are the only ones I would worry mostly about fabricating new ones for.

Hrm...true.....true.

I think that the GC8 plate fits the BC/BF series....I remember someone buying one a while ago.

As for the newer cars (95+) maybe one size will fit both....how much did they change the underside?

From what I have here, its about a couple of feet square, 3/16" thick and aluminum so it wont be that heavy. 20lbs MAX. Just lose the difference in weight. I know I need to. Damned beer gut.

hey that'd work out pretty good then cause i just lost 15lbs actually. now to try and keep it off eh?

but seriously 20lbs isn't that big of a difference when you consider a rock tearing something up or a hole in the ole oil pan...

Hiroki--when youre done, send it to jghoddoussi@electronmetal.ca Thanks for helping, dude! GOOD WORK! (still try it with the cardboard, just in case )

The plate should weigh around 20lbs. The WRX plate, for instance, which is 32" x 28" 3/16" aluminum, weighs approx 16lbs. It is highly doubltful that you'd notice any difference in performance.
