Default Looking for a little help from AKIC

I have been trying to get an actual career started and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I am trying to get into purchasing/buying/expediting pr analyst for goods/materials/ either on the slope or for a manufacture.

Everyone I've meet in Alaska has amazing connections and are some of the best at networking. I am looking for any leads, websites to check out, companies that are of high standard to work for, as well as any additional constructive recommendations.

I have a bachelors degree in Finance and prior experience in inventory control. I'm a little open to the actual field to start a career, but has to be analytical with some problem solving.

Either post here, or send me a PM, any help would be great! Doesn't need to be in Alaska, and I am open to move anywhere for the right career.

Thanks,

Rob

I think you'll need to pass a drug test for slope work.

I have been looking at Bp's opening...haven't really seen anything. As for the drug part, I'm clean.

The company that does most of BP Alaska's purchasing and expediting is ASCI - Advanced Supply Chain International, LLC. You might check with them; they have offices in Anchorage.

CH2MHill also has a large presence on the slope, with (I believe) a large purchasing dept.

Asci has 2 positions currently list all requiring 5+ years experience, and CH2Mhill doesn't seem to have anything outside of labor positions on the slope atm. This is all helping though, cause I didn't know this until I looked, just relaying what I have found.

It may also help that I'll be more or less entry-level.

Is there a company that does recruitment/hiring for most of these companies? Similar to Addecco or Express, not necessarily temp services but employment solutions as well?

A related bachelor's degree plus "some" pertinent experience should put you at least in the running for the positions with 5 yrs experience required. Write a targeted resume and cover letter.

Nana Management Services is another good place to look for the type of job you mentioned.

Many of the bigger companies mentioned have their own HR dept's and handle their own hiring. They might use contract help, but as far as the applicant is concerned it is a company show.

Don't forget all of the govt. agencies that have big purchasing depts such as the University of Alaska, the big school districts, etc.

Good luck.

Don't discount JBER either. That have a lot of civilians doing that sort of stuff. Try USAJobs.

I always looked at a bachelors as non-experience. Does a 4 year degree and a year in the field make for 5 years experience? If so I may have blew over a few potential jobs that looked interesting.

I actually found a really nice entry level position with the USDA on a 18 month contract to hire in Palmer, but haven't heard anything back about it and couldn't find a contact number to see if it's been filled. It's almost impossible to try and call an HR department to follow up on an application, they don't want to hear from anyone?

Never, never, ever not apply because of what you think. Let them tell you that you are not qualified.

Bob you're a star!!!! The job I want is open until the 28th (today) does that mean that can't contact anyone for interviews until after the close date? I'm not sure how government jobs work. I am going to share the job via pm.

What he said.

In many (most?) cases, time at university (in a related field) is considered valuable experience, more so if you did internships or similar activities while in school. This is especially true if the degree is not listed as a pre-req for the job.

Very much so, my internship was actually quite different for a typical student, as it was paid and with chase bank in Chicago

Yeah, after sitting on a lot of hiring committees and being on the applicant side several times, I would answer this way-

Do the very best resume and cover letter you can. If you want the job you are applying for, the resume and letter should be created just for that application. Do your best to address every requirement listed in the position announcement in some way(if you don't you will likely be washed out in the prescreening process). Be creative, but don't lie.

After you do the best you can on the application, wait. Your application has to be screened with all of the others and no, the committee does not want to talk to you until you have been selected for the "short list". If they have a question about your app, they will call you.

If you are called for an interview or more rigorous screening, then you may have the opportunity to follow up and thank your contact person, while trying to sell yourself further.

Always remember, the screening and decision process takes a lot of time; it is worse now, since the hiring committee is worried about the company being sued if the process is not "fair". If you haven't been rejected, you are still in the running.

Long post...

I've had a few people look over my resume and cover letter, but with your expertise as well, I'd appreciate some insight. If you could pm me your email and have some time to look over it that would be greatly appreciated

Knew you'd have to point that out. I had a rather rude awakening on life a few weeks ago and made me very aware of my ignorance in the past.
