Default 99 RS to 96-98 JDM 2.0 turbo swap

Picked up a fully loaded 99 RS, even has the stock subwoofer under the back seat. Nice car! The only problem is it needs a motor. It's throwing the p0304 code. My initial thought was a burnt valve, which is common with these 2.5's, but the leak down test revealed that it has 85psi in cylinder 4, and ringland issues. So I'm doing a swap!

I got quoted $1,400 for a JDM 2.5 SOHC that the company said would be plug and play, but I'm more interested in getting a 96-98 JDM EJ20 turbo for the swap. I got a quote for $1070 shipped, and got a quote on getting the harnesses merged for $600 if I need to.

Just trying to figure out exactly what this would entail. I've looked at a ton of swaps for the newer EJ20's out of the WRX in detail, but none have really told me what this swap would require.

Help? Has anyone done this? You guys rock.

Go on RS25.com and start researching and find someone to do it for you or help you. Also you could put another NA motor in for WAY cheaper than that... What were you looking on eBay at importers?

Well I am equipped to do the work myself, just wondering if anyone on here had any experience with that particular swap.

And what would be your suggestion for getting an NA 2.5 SOHC like is in it for the least amount of money? I don't need the harness, ecu, or any accessories if I get the same motor.

Well they probably actually lied to you cause there are no 2.5 SOHC motors that are straight plug and play in your formerly 2.2 Impreza. You can put one of the DOHC 2.5's in with no issues once you get a header for it cause it's a dual port head rather than a single port head like the 2.2

I said in my first post that I just picked up a 99 RS, 2.5 SOHC. So my question still stands, what's my most cost efficient option for a replacement? Or what would be required for a 96-98 JDM EJ20 turbo swap?

Now for the turbo swap... You would need the turbo ECU, having your harness merged, and redoing full exhaust. I'm not 100% sure if the older JDM turbo radiator fits same as the NA ones so you may need to replace that. If you need to pass plug in emmissions it won't work due to the JDM ECU's tune and all. They can not be reflashed like the US 02+ WRX motors.
You may choose to get a US 2.0L or 2.5 WRX/STi motor.
I have a friend with a complete WRX swap he no longer wishes to swap if interested?

For sticking with the 251 I'd just hunt throught he classifieds on here or on RS25 and find one. There's ussually plenty floating around from people rebuilding them or tearing good ones out for swaps.

Salvage Search on google could also yield some really good engines. Good luck with your fix.
