Default Whining noise coming from or near the alternator.

I have a 2002 WRX that I bought used one year ago. It's been running great and I was using it as a daily driver practically every day. There is only 97K miles on the whole car. Recently, because of a new job and how much further and worse the roads are around here, I bought another car for commuting so the Subaru is no longer a daily driver.

So it's gone from being driven every day to sitting in the driveway for several days until I decide to take it out to a friends house or similar weekend outing.

This past Friday night I start it up cold and I hear a whining noise coming from either the alternator, or the other cylindrical shaped device running off the belt that sits to the right of the alternator(not really sure what it is if someone could shed some light on that). If I rev the engine the noise gets higher pitched. After running the car for a while, driving about and having it warm up, the whining changes to a rattling sound. As far as driving, the car accelerates fine, turbo holds it's pressure as evidenced by the boost gauge.

I'm thinking it's either a pully the belt runs through or bearings on either of the devices that are powered by the belt. I plan on taking it to a shop and have it checked out/repaired. Any insight into what may be making the whining/rattling noise would be great.

Thanks.

Sounds like it could be the A/C tensioner/idler Pulley. Take off the belt that goes to the A/C and see if the bearings spin free or if they seem crunchy/seized.
(pretty common problem, cheap/easy fix)

*you'll have to remove the alternator/PS belt to take off the a/c belt though...several threads on here, do a quick search and I'm sure you'll find them.
