Not too bad. Wish they had a bed-mounted bike carrier as an option, though.

EDIT: and the H-6 would be nice, too

Yeah, it's kinda weird that they show the Baja (in the shots that Irvine Subaru was showing) with a bed-mount bike rack, but it's not an option here... Wonder if that will change once they're actually out?

And yes, I'll be waiting for the H6.

Methinks that's some pretty decent pricing. The bed-mount bike rack might be a dealer option, not port-installed. One might be inclined to inquire with Irvine regarding it.

I feel an H6 coming if the Baja sells well in its 2nd/3rd year.

I've been told that the bed mounted bike rack will be an option. From getting to poke around at a production model it looks like a good vehicle for a 4 person mountain bike trip with a rack on the roof and the bed rack.

Subaru finally got around to issuing an official press release on Baja pricing, confirming the prices that zabutter unearthed from the Baja website. Here's a link to the press release:

And Bloomberg carried a related article today, which includes Baja sales projections:
Quote:
Fuji Heavy's Subaru Sets Prices for Baja Small Pickup Truck
By Alan Ohnsman

Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Aug. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.'s Subaru unit set prices for the new Baja, a small U.S.-built pickup truck that the Japanese automaker is counting on to lift sales in the world's largest market.

The all-wheel drive Baja, a four-door model with a short pickup bed, will cost $23,995 with a manual transmission or $24,795 with an optional four-speed automatic transmission, the company said. The small truck, with a 4-cylinder, 165-horsepower engine, goes on sale Sept. 1, Subaru said.

Fuji Heavy Industries, 21 percent-owned by General Motors Corp., expects U.S. sales to increase 2.2 percent this year to 190,000 after an 8 percent gain in 2001. Subaru car and wagon sales this year through July declined 3.1 percent to 101,774 compared with last year's first seven months, and the company is counting on the new model to reach its target.

Tokyo-based Fuji Heavy Industries began making Bajas in July at its Lafayette, Indiana, plant, which also builds Legacy and Outback wagons and sedans. Production of the model should average 24,000 units annually. The Baja is the first of four vehicles Subaru's U.S. sales unit, based in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, has said it will add by 2006.

I think the last line is the most interesting...

Four new models in four years? That's not a very long timeframe.

So, let's see. There's that 5+2 triangle car that Subaru showed at the Tokyo Auto Salon. And then there's the always-on-the-horizon SVX luxo-car successor. But I'm hoping that the Greek designer that FHI hired away from Alfa Romeo is hard at work on a two-seater sports Subie.

I'm guessing two of the "new" models are the Turbo Forester and the STi.

Default Tooling-up

The Indiana Plant is fully geared-up for Legacy/Outback production hence the Baja (relatively easy to merge Baja production runs with the existing Legacy production.)
It may be something else like an SVX type sport/luxo based on the Legacy/Outback Platform (also relatively easy to squeeze-in). As well as the joint venture SUV with GM.
Because to bring the Forester/Impreza platform over to the states may be costly. Also just to make a "low volume" Impreza like the STi would not be logical. They would first bring the Impreza line over to the Indiana plant and tool-up to make make the full line of Imprezas (TS/2.5RS/WRX) before they would make the STi.

It said vehicles to be sold in the USA, not made in the USA.
