I have an 05 wrx with unknown year engine, 4eat. The engine has slight rod knock. When on a cold start it hardly has any power and the brakes are incredibly spongy and barely work, also mass gas leak in the cabin. It used to hesitate until I sea foamed the vac lines. And exhaust smokes a lot more than other cars I see on the road. This all in the cold, bone stock. any ideas guys? Thanks

Kinda hard to diagnose with a brief description. I would look for a boost/vacuum leak. Or compression test to rule out any engine damage.

ok, do i test vacuum lines the same way as with a boost leak? spray bottle of soapy water? any info on the brakes? fluid looks fine. any time they are cold they hardly work, have to floor the pedal every time i need to brake, then after a while (usually when the engine is at its peak temp.) the spongy-ness dissipates and the brakes work fine, sometimes if i pump them a couple times just after i start the car they will work a little better. condensation in the lines? i also heard that the re-manned calipers do this in cold temps, i bought my car used so i dunno if they are original or not.

How many miles are on it? Do you know anything about its history? Has a dealer looked it over (for recalls, general upkeep?) Did you run a Carfax on it by chance? Sometimes those reports show repair history and even maintenance info can be found on there - - -

the car has 102,000 miles the engine apparently has 82,000. my first motor spun a bearing and other bits from lack of oil, had a used replacement was put in. it was from a crashed car, this new motor is absolute junk, ive had a fuel purge valve fixed, tumbler valve replacement, reseal the crankcase (due to the oil leak from the crank case, i now have a lightly spun bearing). when they put this new motor in i believe they knocked my A/C lines a bit, it all leaked out and doesnt work. right now i have problems with the infamous gas smell in cabin in the cold, motor has a slightly unstable idle when cold, motor has no power in the cold, its slower than my 74 HP '84 subaru was. The breaks do not work in the cold whatsoever. ive looked at my injectors while it was cold running, cant see any fuel leaking, but i can definitely smell it coming from the driver side. i go to the subaru dealer in cheyenne wyoming, be careful there, i had an oil change, trans flush, diff oil change. they put a quart too much oil in the motor, and a week after i had it done my 4EAT transmission over heated...

carfax said it had run over a cop once on icy highway, did no damage. and maintenance was every once and a while oil change. it had been repainted as you can see it a half ass painjob you van see the masking lines when you open the doors, its a slightly darker color haha whole passenger side. i kinda bought into this piece of ****, so its my fault for not fully looking into it. any way, could the motors action be the consequences for having slight rod knock for the past 5 months?
