Default checking oil

One side of the stick says to much the other side either shows low or oil half way up the stick. Which should I pay attn to. I have read threads that say this is an issue. I had to swap oil but not filter. (drain gasket was bad after 500 miles on last oil change) I put in 4 qts not the 4.2 and its showing over full. It has been sitting for about 5 hours. Hell when I pull the stick and try again I get oil way half way up the stick. I have had a few cars and this one dosnt seem to like getting its oil checked. Im not a proctoligst but im sure im doing it right

Pay attention to side of the dipstick with the L and F marking. There is still a small amount of oil that may have come out of the engine if you had removed the filter. As long as you're not over the notch in the dipstick (above the F) when the engine is hot, you're fine.
