Default Short Throw Shifter

I ordered the Short throw shifter as one of my options on my new 2012 wrx. I was expecting a more sportier feel to the shifter, but it feels like there is a long throw between gears. Is there a way to verify they added this option on my car? They forgot to add the shift knob to my order, so now im thinking they may have forgotten the STS too.

It says it came with the STS and bushing kit on my invoice, but that doesn't prove anything.

Take a picture and post it? The height should be shorter?

From what I have heard, the SPT STS is not that much shorter than stock. If you want shorter get the kartboy STS with bushings.

I ran into the same issue with my 2012 where I thought that the short throw wasn't installed. It turned out that the Subaru STS is just extremely underwhelming.

Pretty much this. the 6 speed option was only a 10% reduction in throws. I havent calculated the new platform 5 speed but our short shift kit is right about 40% reduction over the OE lever.

Underwhelming is right. What a waste of money. But still i cannot verify that they even installed it, becuz it looks to be very close to stock.
I dont think a picture would prove anything, since it isn't significantly shorter than stock.

Usually the shifter itself is not shorter. It's the throw of the shift that is shorter not the actual height.

Either way, it's just a lesson learned to not include things like this in the package when ordering your vehicle and do the upgrades yourself to get EXACTLY what you want. Then you have money well spent.

I think it is slightly shorter and only slightly less rubbery, its not a night and day difference, nor worth the money. I tried the STI 6 speed, that thing felt absolutely perfect!

Are you referring to the Subaru STS or an aftermarket one?
Did you compare it to the stock shifter? How different is it?

I understand that the height might not be significantly shorter than stock, but i expected the throw between gears to be smaller. However, i dont have any experience with the stock shifter either, so i really dont know.
At this point, i just want to go back to the dealer and have them show me a stock one vs the STS. If they only had some inventory

When I went for my first oil change I was able to test the stock short throw, nothing to write home about, and in no way worth the cost. But if you get to try out the STI 6 speed, like I did that day, you'll know what you are missing. Aftermarket I have no idea on though...

I'm not a fan of subaru's STS, but I guess it could be worse.

I'm not a fan of Kartboy's either (sorry man). I find it too short and I have to lean forward to get the car into 5th gear, just isn't comfortable. They really needed to move the shifter about an inch or two back from it's current location. It was definitely designed by short Japanese guys. Of course the last Kartboy one I had was in my 2004 STI, so don't know how that compares with one for my 2011 wrx

(and no, i don't lean my seat way back. I'm 37, not 17) I wish subaru could make a shifter like the one in the s2k, so good.

^ Thanks for posting the pics. The Subaru STS (if that is what you're showing?) looks to be about 1" shorter than stock. Mine is definetly closer to the longer one.

When i ordered the car, the option was to get a "STI Short Throw Shifter (5M/T)".
This made me feel like i was getting the same stroke and feel of a STI, which definetly isnt the case.

No I was not referring to the subaru STS shifter in particular. I was responding to tpjavawrx. General statement will get a general answer. They are kartboys.

The Subaru short throw shifter for the 5/MT is not going to feel the same as the STI, I tried them side by side, not even close!

So i guess i was duked by the false advertisement of them calling it a STI 5/MT. Maybe other people can/will learn from this. Dont do it, go Kartboy if you truly want a STS.

Don't get me wrong, its better than the stock shifter, just not by much. I wish my car came with it, but I am not going to pay for the upgrade.

The main reason i did it was becuz i could get the mod past my wife more easily. If i start taking apart my new car she is going to notice and be upset. This factory installed mod passes the honey test, altho its pretty weak for the price apparently.

The short throw shifter option for the WRX does not shorten stick height at all. It only shortens the throw SLIGHTLY.

Get a kartboy.

When you're getting the OEM Short throw shifter you're getting the linkage:

As those above have said, it doesn't offer that different of a throw/height, but does shorten the throw nevertheless. This paired with an aftermarket short shifter will offer an overall shorter throw and height then just one or the other.

Your question on whether or not it was installed, I really couldn't help you. Perhaps there's a part number stamped on it and you can crawl under and double check?
