While I await graduating from Luddite status, here are some preliminary findings. It is apparent from this data that both sides of the transmission argument are partly right, and both are to some degree mistaken.

5-MT tranmission mileage function of % city but insensitive to total miles driven.

Average mpg = 30.99 - 0.07661*% city.

95% of all drivers should anticipate an average highway mileage of 30.99 mpg +/- 4.57 mpg.

CVT transmission mileage a function of % city and total miles driven. 2/3 is % city, 1/3 is total miles driven.

Avg = 30.54 - 0.06399 % City

95 % of all drivers should anticipate an average highway mileage of 30.54 mpg +/- 5.00 mpg.

Additionally 95% of all drivers should anticipate an increase of 0.168 mpg every 1000 miles over the range of 0-15000 (the range of my data).

Avg = 27.15 + 0.000168 Miles

Combining both factors together:

Avg = 29.5 + 0.000152 Miles - 0.0598 % City. This is the proper equation to use if a bit complicated to use.

I see my Sport CVT performance is quite typical, in fact nearly average.

More later. There is more slicing and dicing to do. If I ever succeed in posting plots some might find them interesting. Kind of a shame I was unable to capture anything on average speed.

Upload the pics to tinypic.com and just use the links in the IMG hash

5 speed manual plot. Total miles driven appears to be unimportant.

The CVT contour plot of mpg vs. % city and total miles driven. Plots like this give a nice sense of the relationship but are somewhat inaccurate.

CVT plot of mpg vs % city driving indepedent of the number of total miles driven.

I don't usually drive the Impreza though, I usually drive my Corolla (also rated post 2008 at 36 highway) because on my commute I get 8 or so mpg better (36 vs. 28 now, in winter), depending on conditions, and because it has over 200,000 miles on it so I'm using it up, plus the wifee likes to drive the Impreza on her 25 mile commute (so do I but can't justify wasting the money and miles on my commute).

Great work BP. Shows the cvt is essentially the same as the 5 speed as far as economy.

now you are using my argument that an AWD vehicle will NOT achieve the same MPG as a FWD vehicle. maybe you should make up your mind because the more you try to arque whatever your problem is the more toolish you become. the Impreza is an AWD (all 4 wheels are drive wheels) vehicle, it will not perform the same as your ****ty toyota corolla which let me remind you weighs in at 900 lbs less and is a FWD drive ( that is the front 2 wheels only) and it has less HP, obviously even if they are rated the same the corolla will achieve better mpg. i realize this is a very difficult concept to understand. most vehicles on the road do not achieve their rated MPG at speeds faster than 60mph, yes there are exceptions (your ****box for example) but the majority of vehicles do not. again very very difficult concepts to understand here.
Apparently too difficult for you. Think about it some more.

Just got 28.2 MPG hand calculated on my last tank! About 35% city driving or so with all of the city being short trips under 15 miles total.

AVG MPH for this tank was 35 MPH. The car's displayed value was showing 27.9 MPG.

Oh i was definitely gettin nervous. I never let it get that low. Thats why i took the pic. lol

Although the owners manual says the light goes on when youre down to 2 gallons which i can confirm. So you have at least a good 50 miles once that happens.

How does the fuel level gauge work? I've had the light come on with 0 bars and as many as 2 bars.

Yeah it comes on some miles after I go down to one bar as well. One time it took a while and that was because I was on the highway, probably because projection on mileage was greater.

Figured I'd have this up for reference.

I wonder if the 13' really holds that improved "city" rating

Maybe this was a joke, but the 2012 ratings are including the WRX (265hp, premium fuel) or the new impreza 2.0, which is why the range is bigger, and the numbers are lower.

MPG's didn't change between 2012 and 2013 for the Impreza.

Heck, I can get 50 mpg.

If I slow to 30 mph.

The trouble is I'm making less than $4 an hour for that extra time.

If you think it's worth it, that's up to you. I'd put my flashers on though.
