It is up for discussion that a brz will be my next car if I still have my impreza or another one more practical than said brz.

So when you climbed into a BRZ in Philly, what did you think? I haven't sat in one yet. But all the reviews are glowing.

I thought it was hard to get into, I thought the inside was what you would expect from a sports car: not as much visibility (short windshield) or elbow room. I didnt take much note of the quality of materials, but its more like a cockpit than the impreza drivers seat. Like it feels the car wraps around you. It sits very low to the ground and theres not much of a back seat. I dont think it was cramped, just less space overall.

To bring this back on topic, i think it gets epa 34 mpg highway which is great. with 2wd, should be easier to get epa estimates

Yep, if I run a tank where I'm not doing anything but commuting to work, 0.9 miles one way, I average ~22-23 mpg.

The blue light JUST goes out when I arrive at work, and JUST goes out when I get home. It's in the start-up routine almost the entire time the car is on and guzzles the gas.

Luckily, I know that I can hit, and have hit 42-44 mpg on the highway.

It's interesting that I could go barely 250 miles on one tank, then jump on the highway and go almost 650.

The fact that it's awd is already considered in the calculation. Look at other vehicles that are available in 2wd and awd on the EPA website. Identical vehicles are different from 2wd to awd or 4wd.

btw, i wanted to thank this forum for pointing out that when in either defrost mode, the AC is automatically on, even without the indicator light on the climate control, unlike all other cars i've had.

since this realization and switching my vent mode back the normal flow, except when necessary (rarely for me), i have gained back a couple miles per gallon.

You're welcome. I, too, wish that the AC light would turn on when switching to defrost mode. I'd like the visual indication that the compressor is running.

My last car didn't do it, I have owned that one for 9 years now so I am used to it. Come to think of it my first car didn't either. Subaru is only my 3rd vehicle in 14 years

My Tacoma doesn't show an indicator light when running the defroster, but I've always known what it was doing. I keep it off that setting unless I really need it.

This isn't new. I don't know of any car that uses defrost mode without also using AC. Nothing like blowing humid air onto your windshield when you are trying to remove moisture.

I think his point was that the AC indicator light does not "indicate" that the AC is on.

But that should be understood without evening needing a light on. That is how every defroster is used, with AC.

They don't put the light on because it would cause the ignorant drivers who don't realize that A/C dehumidifies to go nuts trying to shut it off in the winter (or driving the dealer nuts with stupid inquiries) because they want to keep the air warm, not cold, duh...

That's normal. I drive to work daily in mostly highway, MPG there on a good day is around 28MPG. once i drive in the city for the weekend. the MPG drops like crazy. For 2 days weekend, it drops from 28 to 25MPG. and that's with some highway. So your 20.4MPG in all city local is normal. The EPA 27MPG number is impossible in real world city driving, unless they are using rural small city for testing. And kind of stop and go will kill the MPG like crazy. I had my car for 6 months, never see the magic 27/36mpg.

Summarize the last few months of driving, I find the only way to get close to the magic 27/36mpg is:

1. Drive in rural "city" with no stop light, and kind of stop and go kills it big time.
2. Drive in 50-60mph for the best MPG for highway
3. Always have prefect tire pressure, any change in pressure makes a difference.

So drive like a old man for MPG. 27/36 doesn't exist in real world driving. Even the car reviewer can only get 28MPG for highway real normal person driving.

Those rules are pretty accurate. Driving otherwise really hurts mpg.

Does anyone know, following these rules, is it possible to get similair numbers in a 2011 impreza? I would suspect you would get close.

So your saying the AC is supposed to be on when its in defrost mode? When its -15c in my car and i press to defrost the windows I usually turn the AC mode off. Doesn't heat defrost the windows?
I dont fully understand this, can you explain?

You cannot turn off the AC compressor when defrost is on. When below 41 degrees F the AC compressor will automatically engage with defrost on even when the AC button is not lit. The heat defrosts the window but the AC defogs the windows as it dehumidifies the car. This dehumidifying is necessary to keep the car from repeatedly getting foggy. Especially with the snow we trek into our cars. It's those wet mats or puddles that evaporate into the air & deposit onto the inside of our windshields in the winter. Have you seen the "ice" build up on the inside windshield at the bottom that you could scratch off from the inside that takes forever to "defrost"? The dehumidifying action of the AC helps to combat that.

AC removes moisture from the air to defog/defrost anything on the inside of the window, it does nothing for frost on the outside of the window. The AC significantly improves the defog function though, I've used it on all the cars I've had with AC.
