i don't have the manual on me. can you tell me how? and what you prefer?

it seems like miles until you need a fillup would be most useful.

On mine there are two reset type buttons by the rpm/mpg display. The one on the right clocks through the available options. I use a few of them based on what I'm doing. It has instantaneous mpg, avg mpg since reset (A or B), miles to go (how accurate is that anyway? - we don't run out when we should have like twenty to go do we? I haven't checked). It also shows avg speed (worthless) and elapsed time on the current trip, I think. When you put it on instantaneous you can see how bad the mpg is when you're climbing even a mild hill and it won't hold high gear.

how are you calculating MPG to be precise? or are you just going with what the dash reads?

i imagine you'd have to set the trip and write down how many gallons you're filling up with and divide to see... (is it possible the MPG calculator in the car is inaccurate ... on purpose?)
Sounds to me like you haven't read through your owner's manual yet. Doing so would be a good idea. Not only would it explain the various display options on your dash, but you will learn other important tips as well.

Did you know that towing this car with two wheels on the ground (that is to say, not on a flatbed) can be disastrous to your car? Do you know how to install the tow hook so that the tow truck operator can pull the car safely onto the flatbed? Did you know that installing tires of different diameters (like if your front tires wear out before your rears, so you decide to only replace two tires) can damage your differentials? Do you really understand what the MPG (ECO) meter is telling you?

If you read your manual, you will learn these kinds of important facts. But I'm a technical writer, so I'm hyper-sensitive to this kind of thing. Maybe I'm overreacting....

Well said!! Too often people just "get in and drive" and it's important to know what you can and can't do with your vehicle as well as what it's capabilities are!

Oh man this is great! Really?

Has anyone who has read the manual? gone on a long, Hwy trip requiring multiple fills, ie, NY to FL, driving within the posted limits, and responsibly, with a CVT achieved 36 MPG hand calc?

I have not done this, but, before buying this car, and based upon the EPA ESTIMATES, I would have confidently said that I should be able to reach, prob even beat the 36 MPG Hwy number, b/c many other cars out there can and do this. I am looking at my window sticker and 36mpg should not be the when the stars align wizard of oz number that nobody hits, it is as many have stated and ESTIMATE, and should be able to be beat.

^^ What I notice about that video is that the digital display between his speedo and tach has a black background with white text. My Sport Premium is just the opposite, with a white background and black text.

I wish I had the black background....

Um, yes. Did a 1200km or so drive in summer. 5.8l/100km avg hand calculated. Which converts to about 800miles I think. Mpg would be about 40mpg.cruise on no ac windows up. Cruise at 105kph. Or about 65mph.

Edit: filled before I left, filled about 100k from home on the way back.

I have two cars rated the same 36 mpg highway. On my commute in the Impreza Sport CVT I can squeeze 30 mpg if I drive 5 below the limit, in the other ('04 Corolla), driven the same way, I get over 40 mpg.

I thought that driving below 80 in your neckof the woods was sheer madness? Thank god you are still alive!

5 below the limit? Your time is obviously worthless to you. You could shave off MINUTES if you just drive 80mph!

Please explain. I'm guessing the 1999 Corolla is not immune to the laws of physics.

Actually the speed limit is 75, and the elevation for most of it is above the top of Mt. Washington for you east coasters, so wind resistance is less. The '04 Corolla, rated at 36 mpg highway (renormed in '08) easily gets it's EPA rated highway mpg at 70 mph (actually 80 in the summer, but I haven't had the Impreza in the summer yet and it only has 15,000 miles on it so I don't know what it will do)

Same "physics" and "mpg for speed" etc. for both vehicles, for you guys who don't get that stuff.

P.S. I am tempted to put on the flashers when driving 70 so I don't get rear ended...

My mikeage goes down dramatically in the summer. The AC saps a lot of mpg's.

I don't read anecdotal comments from some forum members any more, but I imagine the next stage is to blame President Obama for the data used in the MPG for speed website...though I am guessing the data was accumulated during the Bush Jr administration...
