Yes, but the dealer has to do it. You would be best to bring in a copy of the service manual where it says it can be adjusted, but didn't like the procedure. My dealer was stupid and we spent over 30 minutes arguing that it could be done and another 20 trying to find the page in the book that said it could be done

Unfortunately I don't have the service manual.

One thing I DO miss from having my VW....vagcom and being able to change accessory settings yourself.

Can't we buy a CD? I was under the impression it would always be available, and cheaper than $45...

Search. This was posted a few months ago. I printed it out and gave it to the dealer. I thought I had an electronic copy; however, can't find it now (swapping servers, etc...)

So as my 2013 is just over 4500 total miles I am getting better mileage. Averaging just over 30 mpg last couple of tanks. I do about 60% highway. Still dissapointed with this but its better than I was getting up until now (26mpg). Hoping it goes up higher..

Wow. I was checking the hatchback on Consumer Reports "New Car Buying Guide" and noticed how poorly the CVT Impreza did in it's comparison with the EPA tests of other vehicles.

I just checked the sedans. There are 9 other sedans that got the same highway mpg in the CR test as the Impreza. The average as claimed highway mpg of the others is 30.375 with a standard deviation of 1.1. That means the Impreza at "36" is *over 5 standard deviations from the others CR tested*. Something is very wrong here...

It's a small sample but look at the Crosstrek on fuelly. There are only three or four of us getting the EPA estimated mpg with the rest being way lower. Happily I am second or third from the top I do a lot of highway miles but that is mixed with 20 miles a day in NYC traffic and at least 200 miles a week in the very hilly 'burbs where I live. If I can get acceptable mpg with the type of driving I do I'm likely to think these low numbers are due to the type of driving done or the way the operator uses the go pedal.

But with that logic two different drivers with the same exact Subaru Impreza model may get different mileage?

Inconceivable.

That's what good about Consumer Reports. Their numbers are really closely packed - offset somewhat from the EPA numbers, but yet grouped together, showing that both are consistent. I then looked at the hatchback, and although there were only 4 others to compare with it was pretty much the same story. Average EPA highway was 29 highway, a little lower; and the standard deviation was higher - almost 2. The Impreza CVT hatchback at 36 was almost 4 standard deviations off the mark there - still an outlier in anyone's book. Definite bias error, but really no random error to speak of.

This is with CR's complete set of car type at that unit mpg. No cherry picking involved. Definitely shows there is a problem there.

Pretty sure the EPA just sets the guidelines. They don't verify ever car manufacturers MPG claims. Which is why Hyundai and Kia got sued for false claims

The EPA specifies a testing criteria that the manufacturers follow. The EPA does not run all of the tests, but they do audit a few to see if the manufacturer is in compliance.

This has been hashed and rehashed, but if anyone here thinks Subaru committed fraud in reporting the mandatory EPA MPG numbers that are shown on the Window Sticker, they haven't bothered to file a complaint about it.

Before they get down to actually doing something about their conviction, they should consider that the Fuelly numbers, and experience of many owners here, refutes their complaint that the numbers are fraudulent. Not to mention Consumer Reports (oft mentioned here) has now recommended the car 2 years in a row as a good buy, with excellent gas mileage for an AWD platform.

So if you are one of the complainers/conspiracy theorists/unsatisfied owners, poop or get off the toilet, and file a warranty or even better an EPA complaint already!

We would love to see the response you get from SOA or the EPA when you accuse Subaru of fraud.

I agree with the two previous replies. May not be window sitcker mileage in the winter, but I'm happy with what I'm getting under the conditions I'm driving in and how I'm driving.

Yeah, it's nice to get high MPG's, but there's times when it's mileage be damned, I'm gonna have some fun. The CVT paired with the AWD takes some adjustment to learn how to get the best mileage you can. If you just stomp on the gas, you're going to be very disappointed in the MPG's if you're expecting sticker mileage.

Enough of the complaining. If you don't like the car, sell it and get something else. There's good demand for gently used low mileage Subies out there. No sense in being miserable about it.

Filled up again from 1/4 tank indicated on the gauge. Hand calc. indicates just over 30 MPG avg. (rounded down).

As far as the 2.0 Impreza not meeting the EPA ratings claims, it's not the only one. I've been reading various car mags with long-term updates comparing observed real-world avg. mileage vs. factory EPA ratings. The majority of the vehicles in their test fleet consistently either do not meet or exceed their ratings. Sadly, it tends to be the former rather than the latter.

Highest I've seen off a premium manual (broken in) was 26 avg off a tank. I've finally discovered how to manage the limits of this car now though and well...highest its at right now is about 23. Yeah...I need to calm down lol.

That's very interesting. What magazines and what cars? 14 cars, and the only two that didn't fall into the range of all the others +/-2 mpg were the Imprezas (CVT's). In fact all but one of the others and they were all together +/- 1.5 mpg. The Imprezas were 6 or 7 mpg off.

Sorry you 5 speed owners are tired of hearing about this, but it's costing us CVT owners several times more than putting a quart of oil in every thousand miles. Of course maybe it's the same type of inconsistency in production that's causing the oil loss problem. Apparently unrelated in my case though - ours has 6,000 miles on this oil and it's still a half quart above the fill line where the dealer, in an apparent effort to hide the oil consumption problem, overfilled it.
