because my dash reads correctly, i had the dealer turn it down 3% and when adjusting for my 2.9% low odometer it acutally reads a little low. the guage bounced between 36-39.5 the entire time i was on that road (30 miles), my overall mpg for the tank rose from 24.9 to 28.6 on my way home tonight. you may have noticed that cruise was enabled and the rpm never changed, nor did the position of the MPG needle. i have been driving my car for 10,000 miles with the adjustment in place and it usually is .1-.3 low when compared with hand calc

my radio is out of a forester

this is ~200miles about 30% city 70% highway..

Edit:
This is 249.3 miles to be exact, babying the throttle.. roads I travel on are generally flat. Some uphill and downhill. Roughly 5% downhill, 20% uphill, and 75% flat throughout the duration of the 249.3 miles.

MPH city was from 0-35mph (traffic). Highway was from 60-70mph.

Can you read? My radio is out of a Forester. In 2012 the only option for sat was w/nav.

They redesigned the radio/hvac controls and didn't leave room for the tuner for an easy add on, so I think that is why it was dropped

Do you have it? With the same radio I do? I'm curious as to where they put the tuner

That is why, you don't have the Subaru radio, they really didn't leave room for tuner

I disagree with how many manufacturers decide what options will/won't be available on which models and trim lines. For example, I would have liked to buy a Sport Limited Impreza to get the leather and sunroof, but you can't get the 5-speed manual tranny on a Limited. The manual tranny is a litmus test item for me, so I "settled" for a Sport Premium and live without the leather and sunroof.

This problem isn't only with Subaru. I would have had a similar problem with Ford had I decided to buy a Focus. In 2012, if you wanted a Focus Titanium, you'd have to take the DSG tranny and pass on the stick. I would have been forced to buy a Focus SE to get the stick. I think Ford might have made the stick available on the Titanium for 2013, but I'm not sure.

If you're buying a gasser VW Golf, you can only get a stick in the 2-door model. As soon as you decide to buy a 4-door gasser Golf, you're stuck with the automatic tranny.

So you see, many manufacturers bundle their models/options in ways that aren't as ala cart as we'd like. We're constantly forced to decide what we "need" and what we can live without, and then either fix the problem with aftermarket upgrades or just live without the feature we desire.

In the mean time, I'm simply pointing out to you that for less than $500 you can get a nice touch screen and satellite radio in your car. No biggie. It's much easier to upgrade a stereo than it is to add leather or a sunroof.

38mpg is definitely achievable, and yes hand calc'ed. It depends on your route and speeds.

No one is forcing you to revisit this thread or this forum. You are "exhausting" yourself.

Well a lot of it has to do with manufacturing and volume. If OEM's left options completely open to us, it would likely slow the production line and we'd be waiting even longer to take delivery. What I don't understand is something like wheel options. They all need wheels and they all come from the same place so why can't I get sport wheels on my sedan??? Again this may have something to do with what we don't see behind the scenes but it is kind of annoying when you want to order a car but you still can't get it equipped exactly how you'd like.

The 38mpg was from erie pa to north east pa, back and forth a few times,
not gw, I also have the receipts don't hate my 5speed cause its prettier than yours

UPDATE: now i know that you want to dispute everyones numbers but you really should get over it.
On this specific trip car had been taken from buffalo to ontario, then back to the us and straight to erie. Refuel in erie pa,
and drove around a bit then headed to northeast pa via i90, I took it easy aka 60 or so then while in north east we spent the
next few days going to different vineyards. They are all back country roads some speed limits are 45 or below, some are 50
some are 55. In the summer with stock impreza I easily got 35mpg drivig rt 17 from exit 16 to middletown ny and back
with some 87 time thrown in. The car was about a week or so, so I was driving economically.

I might be able to crack 40 in summer, why? rims are lighter, tire is lighter than my current oem rims and winter tires.
I do have synthetic fluid in the tranny so that gives a slight bump, I have my kendall in the engine nice and fresh
so thats good. Its gonna be hot, so road trips are a must. If i get the right conditions I am certain I might be able
to get some good mpg. But what do I know.

Yes, I'm sure the reasoning is that manufacturers need to streamline the assembly line, hold down parts inventories, and so on. The other factor is marketing. Manufacturers know what cars sell rapidly and which cars sit on the lots. I'm sure Subaru has plenty of data proving that ninety-something percent of people who buy a top-line Impreza Limited don't want to shift gears themselves. I know that I'm in the minority in this regard.

My minority status keeps me from getting exactly the car I want. I compensate as much as I can with aftermarket mods (head unit, satellite radio receiver, leather steering wheel wrap, leather shift knob). As for the leather upholstery and sunroof, I guess I'll just have to live without those niceties.

Get Katzkin leather instead. From my experience, it's better than OEM.

Yeah, but more spendy than I'm willing to pay. Very nice though; I've seen pictures.

Perhaps if my next car is something like a WRX, I can get a stick AND leather AND sunroof.

The i90 has a speed limit of 65mph and you state that you were going 60mph? Your time either has no value or you are full of it. Which is it?

If 5mph difference affects you that much, you have poor time management skills!

No it's not because from my experience I very rarely see anyone driving 60mph on the i90 unless they are towing or driving a motor home.
