I know this, my fuelly is sitting at 27.8mpg over the last 16,900 miles. Which is pretty much right where it should be with any type of mixed driving.

But my dash reads correctly, I filled up last night: dash read 27.0mpg AVG, I put in 11.5 gallons and had 310.9miles on the tank (with my 2.9% odometer error). if you want to check the math go ahead and let me know what you get

He is complaining about not coming clost to the HWY mileage when he is driving it in mixed highway and city traffic.

Take the car on a highway trip, a highway with fuel stations along the way. Fill up at a rest stop and drive at 60-65mph using cruise control, then stop and fuel up at the next one and run your calculation.

Don't mix in your side roads driving with your highway driving, and you will break the 30mpg mark easily, and probably surprise yourself with that elusive 36 HWY figure.

Stop confusing your expert driving skill with cruise control, and stop confusing HWY with Combined, that might help you see if the car is truly underperforming on the highway.

These guys with 5MT's telling CVT owners our low mpg is our imagination or beyond reasonable excpectations are simple bozos. Compare what other cars get in the real world via Consumer Reports with their EPA estimates and it's not only obviously inflated, but possibly criminal what Subaru says they get on their EPA test.

Here is a good idea, keep the cvt bitching in that thread and keep this one for reporting of mileage....

.
I drive like a bat out of hell lmao. I was concerned with getting sub 20's driving like this but so far the fuel economy has held up by which I am quite impressed by tbh.

I start cold, usually don't let the car warm up, have the heated seats set to low automatically, run the defrost up front on low, and still no tank under 23 mpg's. For some reason, even when I tried to baby this car it still would get only 24/25 so I pretty much just let it go and decided to stop worrying about the mpg's and just enjoy the car. It's $45 a fill up, I work from home 2-3 times a week, and still fill up about once a week. Not much to really gripe about. Now If I had an everyday commute, yeah I'd be a bit irked to say the least.

flyboy1100 did you say that you had your dash MPG calibrated? Wondering how it matches your actual. the 2.9% ... your odo reads more then actual.. correct?

Yes, I had the dealer turn it down 3%, and my odometer reads 2.9% low. So it works out to be correct

Thank you. And I'm sorry you aren't delighted with your Impreza.

Having said that, as a 5MT Impreza owner, I feel that I have nothing to contribute to this thread, so I'll be unsubscribing now. Of course, I will continue to participate in other threads where my situation is relevant.

Good luck!

How come every time you mention low mpg's and cvt equipped imprezas you always group it together as if ALL cvt imprezas are in the same boat??

OK, but it behaves like one though more specifically calibrated. I'm just starting here. Step one will be getting a factory service manual. Noticed that after a fill up and odometer reset it takes a mile or two to come back on. Don't know if its the fill up or the reset that does that. I still have a lot to learn on these after 15 years with jeeps. Probably have to pick up a new scanner too. Thanks.

Cruise does well on flat terrain, it does not do as well on hilly terrain. The only thing I can think of is it uses engine braking or transmission braking to keep the car at the set speed. When I go downhill on a long grade I tap the brake so it disengages and it seems to coast better then resume once at the bottom.

You must be a flatlander Couple of more months and we'll be heading down and back to Pauleys island in SC so I'll see how that goes. Last trip end of August we drove an 8 mpg fully loaded moving van down there and drove a hertz 2012 Chevy Cruze back, the chevy got 39mpg no matter how I drove it, pretty much set the cruise at 70 and left it there all the way up 95 to Stroudsburg Pa but with a whole heck of a lot less gas stops.

of course, most of us know that. i was just making sure that your car was indeed functioning close to mine. while the instantaneous gauge is overall useless (i never leave it on), it gives a hint if somehow your car was an outlier overall.

i agree: i lose tons of average MPG on startups after a nice run of bringing th average up. that being said, and i'm sure it's old news. if you drive between 60-65 MPH, on a road trip, you should be able to meet and beat the EPA Highway estimates on a long trip, hand calc'd, regardless of what the display reads.

if you throw in some traffic, faster driving, and a few warm ups in there that drive down the tanks overall MPG, you probably won't hit it.

Following up on my previous post:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...postcount=3781

I just filled the tank tonight on the way home. Total of 312 miles on it, net another 91 miles since my weekend experiment. Most of the week's driving was my usual commute, with a couple short sprints around town at highway speed.

As expected, my MPG's dropped after the weekend trip, and the tank ended up as follows:

Full tank - 312 miles - display MPG = 26.4, calculated = 24.6

Partial tank since Sat. AM reset - 219 miles - display MPG = 27.0

On the 4 mile drive from the gas station to home, display started off sub-20 MPG, and hit just under 33 MPG once home. Those 4 miles were 30-45MPH, a few rolling hills.

CVT, PZEV, 13k+ miles, hatch.

A pretty good summation of the 5spd impreza from car and driver

Months in Fleet: 13 months
Current Mileage: 41,099 miles
Average Fuel Economy: 28 mpg
Range: 406 miles

Quote:
However, another driver commented that seat comfort was okay initially, but his lower back started to ache on stints longer than 100 miles. Top praise was reserved for the Impreza’s seat heaters, which were “strong enough to leave griddle marks.”
...By the time the odometer hit the 40K mark, the sport-cloth seat fabric was pilling across the more highly trafficked portions of the front seats like lint balls on an old sweater. And the driver’s seat began squeaking like a cheap motel bed. Any shifting of weight—to shift, brake, accelerate, or to reach for something—set it off.
for all the complainers about the brakes
Quote:
Rolling on the Impreza Sport Premium’s standard 205/50-17 all-season rubber, braking performance was deceptively good, the Impreza stopping from 70 mph in 164 feet (two shorter than at the beginning of the test), an amazing 20 feet shorter than a 2012 Honda Civic EX sedan and 19 feet shorter than a 2012 Mazda 3 i Touring we tested. Likewise, our Impreza’s 0.87 g of lateral grip (0.85 g during initial testing) compared favorably to the 0.82 g of the Civic EX and 0.81 g for the Mazda 3 i.

Ok so I filled up today and here are the results......

417 miles
13.935 gallons
29.9 MPG
Avg MPH was 46

about 1/3 of those miles were on I-95 at about 80 mph....obviously there's slower highway and some city mixed in there as well.

Today's fill:
373.5 miles
13.359 gallons
Dash said 30.6 avg mpg, 27 avg mph.
Fuelly says 28.0 mpg
85% city

What's the best/most accurate way to do an odometer test? Mile markers? GPS? Seems like the dash is generally 1.5 to 2.5 off.

First fill-up on my CVT equipped Crosstrek

330 miles
11.98 gal
27.5mpg hand calculated, 30.3 on the gauge.
Average speed was 27, iirc

Dunno how well the buffoons at the dealership filled it up, or what they did before handing it over, and I did overfill the tank a little with two extra squeezes to shutoff after the initial shutoff. Have to see what happens on the next fill-up.
