The MINI is getting ~32 on my 110 mile commute these days (mostly highway @ ~75mph).

I want a 5mt hatch. What do you guys think I'll get for MPG? It "needs" to be the 33 epa estimate or I don't think I'll switch. The MINI is 10 years old and I'm sick of it at this point. I'd gain space and AWD and go to normal gas from premium, but I want to keep it at 33mpg @ ~75mph. Likely? And it's an easy commute w/o much stop and go and I'm good with spacing etc. I can also cruise a bit. And in the forester when I drive it I've gotten 28~30 just to show how I drive -vs- the wife -vs- the EPA's numbers...
Don't make the mistake I did and compare this vehicles epa numbers to any other vehicle you've owned in the past. The epa numbers are achievable but in my opinion are not an accurate gauge of what one will see in real world driving. My average has improved slightly with the warmer temps but I still only see 26 mpg in combined city/ highway driving.

My dash says 39 mpg when I go 65 mph.

Yes and mine on its worst day is 2mpg overoptimistic. Generally about 1.5.

right, but I'm comparing it to a 2 year old subaru, weren't the EPA tests then the same as they are now? Also, my average speed on the way to work is around 55mph since it's 55 miles and takes an hour! I just get up to 75mph at times...

Does any of the rental houses rent current imprezas? I'd love to borrow one for a day or two so I'd know. Basically I really need it to get no worse than 30mpg or I'm not interested. Better would be nice but not needed but the first number needs to be a 3. a 2004 WRX got high 20s (averages 24.5) for me, so 30 with a 2l non turbo with 100 less hp should work...

Do you need awd? It sounds like mpg is more important. In my case I wanted awd otherwise I would have bought a mazda3

^^ This. If I was after a manual hatch it would be a Mazda3. There are a few of them out there: Golf, Elantra GT, RIO5, Audi A3, 3, Imp. I think all the rest are smaller or have worse MPGs. Of course if smaller is OK, the field opens up. Accent and Sonic are neat little things.

I actually almost bought an elantra, then I found out the mpg weren't as good as advertised. After that it was between the impreza and the Mazda 3 and I decided after the test drive that awd was worth the extea 10-15% in fuel.

I'm by no means complaining, lifetime is 28mpg, last 10 or so fills are 29.x and will continue to improve as temps continue to rise. I think with the Mazda 3, realistically I would be seeing 34ish, and would have stuck a few times this winter...

I got the Impreza for it's AWD, not so much because I need it (I used to, the winters have been milder the past two years), but I just couldn't let myself get a FWD car. Sure, maybe if it was a Focus ST with a good front diff, but other than that, whenever I pass anyone I just smile to think that while they are driving torque steering understeer boxes I have a small affordable economy car with a performance driveline. I'll stick with real wheel drive.

I was very close to a steal on one until this Impreza limited with its options dropped to 21k

when they gave me 1.9% on top of that i couldn't pass that up for anything. I probably could have squeezed them for a hatch limited but seeing how I haven't even put cargo to use I surely don't mind the sedan.

Also I am coming up on 80% city tank that is surprisingly(because of how lead footed i am) close to 26-28 mpgs.Warm weather is definitely starting to shake things out

I'm a subaru guy. We're on our 5th right now. The mini was my wife's car 10 years ago. She drove it for 8 years while I had a WRX. When kid 2 arrived we needed something bigger than a sedan WRX and a MINI. So the 9 y/o WRX w/150k on it got traded for a forester. I got the MINI.

I ski 10~15 times a year and live in NE and drive in the snow all the time. The MINI with all seasons has been OK but I'd prefer AWD. But I recently started a job with a 55 mile one way (interstate so it'll be pretty good/clean when it snows) drive. So mileage is now pretty important. Before it was nice but not crucial. If I get a FWD car snows will be added for winter for sure (and to the MINI if I'm still in it). But AWD is also nice and it's good enough with the stock all seasons to work until those tires are shot, then I'd add a set of snows on the OEM rims and get summers... Other options are:

Quote:
2013 Ford Fiesta SE $14,579 39 Hwy 12 gallons ~429 range 5mt
2012 Toyota Prius c $17,228 46 Hwy 9.5 gallons ~391 range, CVT
2013 Chevrolet Cruze Eco $17,446 42 Hwy 12.6 gallons ~487.2 range 6mt
2013 Dodge Dart aero $17,722 36 Hwy 15.8 gallons ~532.8 range, 6mt
2013 Hyundai Elantra GT $17,869 37 Hwy 14 gallons ~481 range, 6mt
2013 Subaru Impreza Wagon $17,972 33 Hwy 14.5 gallons ~445 range, 5mt
2013 Honda Insight (base) $18,514 44 Hwy 10.6 gallons ~422 range CVT
2013 Mazda Mazda3 $18,975 38 Hwy 14.5 gallons, ~513 range 6mt
I want a hatch that gets 400~500 in range, 30+ MPG and has BT, cruise control and a 6mt. I'll settle for 5mt or CVT if it means stellar MPG and I'll trade other things. I prefer the look of the hatch but the others are on the list because they get great mileage w/o a hatch option...

But yeah, I LOVE subarus. The good and the bad news is I know too much about them so with any of the other cars on that list I could just get one and maybe not mod it. I already have ~10 things I want to do to an impreza if/when I get another (and none are power related!). The other thing is the wife ALSO loves subarus now for the fact they're AWD and she's grown to love the forester (she hated the WRX, ZOMG SPOOL! and it had a cobb short shift kit in it where she'd go 1 -> 2 -> 5 ).

But yeah, the subaru checks the most boxes and is a car I actually want. The rest are just kinda meh commuter cars I don't care about. But I "need" to get 30mpg to make it work out financially in terms of affording the payment (the MINI is long since paid off) AND the gas. It'll be nice to NOT be putting premium in either car though for once.

I think on a reasonably highway drive, not including huge hills or driving mostly 70mph+, you will be seeing ~30 MPG's, better in the summer and a bit lower in the winter, especially if you get snows mounted.

Just get it. 30mpg isnt hard to acheive on highway commutes.

I've been driving jeeps the last 14 years, 2 97 wranglers and a 98 Cherokee. I bought a 13 Impreza 5 door cvt sport, been good in snow, I do local commute, 25 mi one way, mostly uphill and downhill local roads and get 32mpg consistent. Last week I got 35mpg out of the tank. Even though I have had it for 3 months I still have not taken it more than 40 miles from home. Next week it will be down to philly and back so I hope to see what kind of mileage it will get on the PA turnpike where I can throw the cruise on and see what happens. Either way I am much happier now that I don't have the sub 20mpg I got with the jeeps on a weekly basis. So far my gas savings is over $250 a month with the imp, the jeeps were costing me about $90 a week in gas.

Filled up yesterday, hand calculated was 34.5 mpg....I've added something to the car since the last fill up, but it's too early to tell if that's the reason for the higher MPGs.

No....AEM Dryflow air filter....not saying this is the reason, but if I consistently get higher than the 31-32 I was before, then I can't help but think it helped. Time will tell!

If you live in the southern states, your summer mpg's are lower than winter. The A/C sucks a lot of efficiency away.

if you drive a serious miles like I do than nothing beats a diesel. My 2012 TDI easily blew the EPA #'s out of the park. I got 50-52mpg highway every day doing 65-70mph 42-43 mpg at +75mph

Would still be driving it if I didn't run off the road right into a tree (ice) during the last big snow storm.

Now i'm back into an Impreza. Got a great deal on a white base 2013 with Signiture series sunroof and Katskin Leather seats. Love it!

Cars I have had:
2006 VW GLI (stage 1 REVO) loved it but sucked in snow
2008 Impreza STI (stage 2 Cobb) was a beast, great in snow and everything else
2012 VW TDI loved the MPG and Interior. Sucked in snow
2013 Impreza Growing on me! I am getting about 34-35 mpg highway. My commute is 60 miles each way.

Same with my Corolla. Also rated at 36 mpg highway but gets 7 or 8 better than the Impreza under identical conditions.
