Make a note of the rpms at highway speeds. At 65mph I think Im under 2k. (Ill have to check)
i'm right at about 2000k at 65mph, maybe a smidge less (1950).

ok: that's good. next step is to drive a stretch at that speed held constant that isn't too hilly and see what the instantaneous readout says or even the average if you tank up some gas and hit the highway immediately.

at 65mph, in my experience you should be hovering around 40mpg.

for your tanks you reported previously, do you know what the average reported speed is?

for me, the best indication of mileage, especially since i have a fair bit of suburbia /city driving each tank, is to look at the average speed.

roughly, if i'm over 30mph average, i get over 30mpg; 26mph yields around 28mpg, 22mph is driving me down to 26mpg, and so on...

that of course is less relevant for tanks that are largely highway/freeway miles as long as there isn't tons of stop and go traffic.

Your experience pretty well matches mine. It really helps to know the average speed and the corresponding mpgs.

I have had the car for about 1 month now and put a little over 600 miles on it. Since I got the car the best tank average I have gotten is 23.6. Now before anyone starts jumping to conclusions I am trying to get the best milage possible.

My daily commute is 80% highway and 20% light town with a small hill or 2. In town the car never sees above 3000 RPM and on the highway the cruise is set at 70 MPH. As a test I reset trip B both going home last night and coming in this morning. To take it to the next level this morning I set the cruise to 65 MPH on the way in and ended up with an amazing 24.1 MPG once I parked.

The last 2 tanks of gas I tired 89 octane and saw no difference. My 4000 + lbs 300hp SUV is currently destroying this car in the MPG category and gets gas from the same wawa.

Has anyone seen this before?
Any recommendations as to what to look at or even how to discuss this with the dealer? I donít want to hear that it is the way I am driving excuse. If I even try to have a little fun with the impreza (not racing it) my mpg drops to about 18 MPG.
Welcome to the club. My 2013 Sport Limited has just about 10k on it. During the winter never saw 30 MPG - Actually just filled up today 402 miles/ 13.5 gallons = 29.77mpg. Your numbers are a bit lower than mine ever were, so there may be something wrong with the car, document it as best you can and bring it in. I can't speak for why you purchased your car - but your story sounds awefully familiar to mine. Maybe trying to improve MPG's only to be disapointed. Other than that, these cars are like little tanks.. seem to be very durable and are great in the rain!! Report back what they tell you. You can even call SBOA and open a file just to document if it does become a long term issue. I actually would recomend that. Good Luck

My last fill up was 11.5 gal and 376 miles. I'll take that any day of the week. Mixed driving back and forth to work 10.5 miles one way. My car seems to have gotten better with more break in and the summer gas. Got a 2013 2.0i with 6k miles on the odometer. So far I am pleased with my first subaru.

There does seem to be a lot of variability in mpg figures for the CVT. Some people report the mid 30's with highway driving, but then again everybody's definition of highway varies as well. I hit the "highway" - an actual state highway - in less than a mile from my house, speed limit 45, then hit the freeway about 7 miles after that. So maybe those reporting the good highway numbers are actually on a rural road driving 50 mph...

That's a good point. Personally Id say anything that's not city is highway, meaning any stretch of paved road without sharp turns or lights for a couple miles at a time. 50 - 65+ mph

Is there a definition by the epa?

stats from my fill up this morning

trip mpg: 23.1
trip average speed: 25 mph

pump gallons: 11.403
calc mpg 21.43 mpg (not sure why there is such a large difference)

The calculated mpg is usually 1.5mpg lower. The odometer is a little slow leading to low hand calcs. This is normal.

25mpg seems like you do a lot of city driving, in which case 23mpg seems more believable. (Even though that's still low)

I am a little surprised by the average speed being that low myself on this tank. I did not write them down but I recall the previous tanks being in the low 30s.

It uses a warmed-up engine and makes no stops, averaging 48 mph (77 km/h) with a top speed of 60 mph (97 km/h) over a 10-mile (16 km) distance.

The EPA test is extremely specific for each category (city, highway, along with the 3 new categories - high speed, air conditioning, cold temperature) - it can be found here:

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml

On the topic of FE, it seems my car is finally starting to come around - it only took a year and a half and 18000 miles - that sure is a shame. Maybe that means the car will last for like a couple million miles. If it takes 10 times longer than normal to break in...it should last 10 times longer too, right?!

So their definition of highway simulates lots of traffic, not as severe as gridlock, but never open road to reach speed limit.

Makes sense, the impreza gets the best numbers under similar conditions (slow highways)

My car has seen improvement lately too. However, it seems to be the summer gas and warmer temperatures - my other car that is also rated at 36 mpg highway has also improved since it has warmed, and still gets 30% better mpg than my CVT.

Tonight's trip home.

I set the cruise at 65 Reset the trip once the cruise was set and recorded the numbers before I turned cruise off.

30 mpg
64 was the average speed
Distance was 5.5 miles

I would expect to see higher numbers?

I drove yesterday 284 miles on highway driving 68 mph with ladder on the kayak mount. Mostly flat road, with air on, 32 mpg. I figured it would be less than that, readout showed 34.2. So who knows, maybe it was the 5.5 miles wasn't really long enough to get a good read. I'm at 6,8XX miles now so things are improving as miles increase.

You really have to do an immediate two way run to get reliable numbers because of wind and grades.
