41.5 calculated, probably ~42 with odo error rate included.

The trip was awesome! =0

P.S. While in the mountains, for almost 350 miles, I was able to maintain 48-50 mpg. Once I hit the flat again though, it dropped =/ Those injectors are smart!

Awesome, Xafen! High elevations and hilly terrain are great for MPG if you have some open road ahead.

Something isn't right with this fuel up. Trip said 30.0 but Fuelly says 27.0. I've never had a 3 MPG difference before. It's normally between 1 and 2 MPG off.

Anyway, filled up with 93 octane this time. Station has 87 for $3.29, 89 for $3.49, and 93 for $3.59. We'll see if $0.30 more per gallon is worth it...

Must be nice, premium is approaching 20% more expensive here

Ya, who knew I should have planned my routes through the mountain passes instead of the stupid low mpg foothills...

Next time I will!

i've had a couple of those tanks before. then, i've also had tanks where it was zero difference, and in one or two cases, the calculated mileage exceeded the computer. weird...

with a 3% odometer error adjustment (pretty reliable and conservative), my lifetime mileage reported is about 0.9 MPG off. (ie, the computer reports almost 1 full MPG high). the raw hand calculated is 1.9 MPG off, but 1 MPG is compensated for if i include corrections for the underestimated odometer reading.

so far my 89 experiment doesn't appear to suggest any noticeable change in MPGs, but i only have about 120 miles on this tank (way too small a statistical sample) and i need a few more weeks of driving to come to an educated conclusion. if it doesn't make a difference, that suggests that your 89 gas likely has less ethanol than the 87 blend. i wonder if that explains the 20 cent/gal difference you pay compared to my 10 cent/gal increase?

Doubt it. It's very station dependent. Some cost $2 more for 91/93 and some are $0.15 more.

By never resetting either Trip A or B from the time you took ownership.

I reset Trip A at every refill for information during the current tank and I reset Trip B at every oil change interval (5K miles)

EDIT: Your question just reminded me of something that happened this morning while I was in Myrtle Beach, SC. With the key in the on position and the engine off, I saw my avg MPH drop from 54 to 53. My avg MPG stayed at 42.9 but maybe it would have dropped too if I left it on longer.

Final trip mpg reading after a bit over 3100 miles:

Taking into account my odo error, I was probably at just under 42 mpg for the trip.

This was my favorite gas station:

Everywhere else it was like pulling teeth to figure out the ethanol content.

My best MPG was actually in the mountains. I could easily maintain 48-53 so long as I stayed in the mountains, and didn't go flat on the foothills. Once on the interstate, I could only maintain 40-42 depending on speed.

My first few days back at work, I'm lucky to break 18 mpg average =/ I have a short commute...it just guzzles gas when cold =/

At that one particular station, yes! I've never seen it before. It must be near something in the refinery chain or a mixing station or something. I was just in love with how clearly they had it all labeled.

As an update after putting on around 4,000 miles. According to my car I'm getting 29.4 mpg overall on the CVT. From my calculations, it's over by nearly 2 mpg. So overall without any correction for the speedometer or tire size, I'm getting around 27 mpg. I drive quite a bit of city and hills so I'm not surprised. If I drive on flat roads in the area I can get closer to 30 or more.

5 speed or CVT?

Really impressive numbers though. I've done a ton of driving through the mountains in PA, VT, NY and MD, I never got better than normal MPG results even with a clear road. And unfortunately I never find E0 gas when traveling

As you increase elevation, engine power goes down, so often people get worse MPG in those areas.

CVT. Keeping it in manual mode most all the time, otherwise it'd want to keep it in 3rd and destroy my mpg for sake of keeping that last few mph.

Keep in mind this was the Rockies (don't know if that makes a difference), most pass approaches I went through were only 5-10 miles long, then had a very nice long descent (route out was going into the Rockies). My return route (coming out), was mostly all interstate, I-25, and I-80, was not near as nice mpg (though still 40+).

I couldn't help but to get great mpg in the Rockies. I kept it in m mode and no matter what I did the mpg needle never went much below half way. Without the oxygen you just can't burn much fuel, so therefore it cuts it back.

The high speed limits on the highways around Vegas kills the mileage, plus going from one area to another is either slightly uphill or downhill, depending on which direction you're going.

Semi-mileage related:

Usually there's a ~5% disagreement between the readout and hand calculated mpg, but I took a short road trip going through a tank over the course of two days and they pretty much agreed. Is a good portion of the error from fuel evaporation?

One option was mentioned already, never resetting the trip(s).

Of course you could also take the mileage for each tank, add together and divide by the number of fills you recorded. You end up with your answer.

I'm pretty sure that the Canadian version does track life time mpg. I'll investigate and report back!
