3 people in car minimal stuff in back. Cruise control on. Got only 32mpg CA summer gas.

What else should I be checking/ doing to get the MPG higher?

Tire inflation, roof rack? Don't keep it in auto mode, the slightest hint of a hill or wind gust will send it into 5th gear.

The biggest problem is probably the 3 people in the car. Id say 32 mpg with 3 people in the car @70mph is not too bad but I would still check the tires as mentioned and also air filter.

You're saying that and extra 300 lbs. with clean air filter and proper tire inflation is going to drop my MPG by 10 miles? Doesn't seem right.

Extra weight KILLS four cylinder gas mileage.

You are in LA, where there is bound to be more traffic assuming your in 405 or 5. I know when I was driving down to LA, my mpg went down the drain as soon as I hit traffic.

When I had my Si, and lived in LA, my gas mileage wasn't my biggest concern. It was clutch wear. That traffic beats the hell out of your clutch.

That's not an unreasonable mpg for this car at that speed. The wind can make a big difference too.

No what I said is that 32mph is good with 3 people in the car. Like the other guy said 300 pounds will kill mpg on 148hp car.

Good looking finding 3 adults that weigh 100lbs each, haha. It's probably at least 450lbs, plus gear, so 500lbs.

Explains the mileage I got driving across the country. I took my Subaru Impreza from Portland Oregon to Boston and only got 31.7mpg or so. I had three adults, and my dog, and we had the car packed to the max.

Incidentally, I still get that mileage when I travel between Boston and NH by myself.

My all-around average in the XV after 7300mi is exactly 30. Two less than my impreza. I'm pleased with the mpg's.

that's fantastic. hand calculated? (is the XV computer off like the Impreza? is the odometer off, too?)

what's the average speed on the computer for those 7300mi (if you kept one trip running since buying)?

Hand calculated is 29+ (30 for all intents and purposes) my display is close, but a tad optimistic. It has odometer error like the impreza, *maybe* not quite as pronounced. I think maybe the xv numbers may be a tad more consistent across the board since there arent three tire sizes available stock like the impreza.
Fwiw- I'm running 33psi front 31psi rear, and Amsoil in the tranny and rear end.
In the last 2000 miles I've seen around one full mpg improvement. Maybe its finally all worn in as its gonnae get. But yeah, I'm very satisfied with my mpg's, as I was with the previous Impreza.
I am able to do lots better than epa because I live in a semi-rural uncongested area full of 50mph zones. At sea level with virtually no real elevation to contend with.
I'm considering removal of the roof rails as I never use them. I could ebay them and buy a sweet lift kit, tires, and a tank or so of gas...

Compared to those that I know with non-CVT 2.5 Subaru's, mine gets epic mileage. Obviously not considering WRX's and STI's. For a wagon with AWD, I'm not complaining about my 30+ average at all..

Does anyone have the larger roofline spoiler on the Impreza or XV? I wonder to what extent it impacts MPG, if at all.

There are many Impreza wagons and XV's in my area with the bigger spoiler. I am getting it in the spring. I can't speak to the MPG, but I can't see it'd change any. The only difference is in crappy weather, the added wind current being pushed down over the hatch is likely to make a mess of your rear window/hatch with rain/snow/debris. haha

Im over 10% decrease in mpg this past week because of cold temps/winter blend.

Winter sucks. At least bring me some powder.

I also noticed a mpg drop. Really hoping it gets better. I have a '13 impreza sport and I'm only getting 24-25. 1100 miles on it

All highway, I'm over 35 average. All city, around 24. Normal driving I get high 20's usually. So for an AWD car, I really can't complain..

Same here, but for the last month, and I'm down about 17% because they just switched to 10% ethanol, and to winter blend at same time, double whammy!

those sound like my numbers.

i'm still experimenting with the 89 octane. if it's a difference, its smaller than hemo was seeing. but it might be a slight improvement (~1 mpg). i think there is too much variability in my driving week to week to make a convincing statement. i may do a couple more tanks and then go back to 87.

I accidentally did a full fill up of 93 once over the summer, not realizing I was in the Subaru - thinking I was in my other car. Didn't really notice any kind of difference in anything.. These computers must just kinda stay steady..

If the computer is tuned for 87 higher octane shouldn't make a difference
