It's not necessarily because the cold fluid is more of a drag. The engine just wants to warm up as quickly as possible.

The low temp light goes out when the engine crosses 120F, which is far from normal operating temperature.

Many manual cars delay illuminating the upshift light on a cold engine so that the driver keeps the engine spinning, even though the car runs just fine in a higher gear.

Our manuals don't have working shift lights, but for the first few highway miles, I stay out of fifth.

Hmm, so I guess the only real difference between waiting and immediate driving might be what r0dzilla was noticing;

The computer gives you a more accurate mpg reading when allowing a 'blue light goes off' warm up.

Even on the CVT, until the "cold light" goes out, it seems to hold the gears longer than after it goes out.

I normally let the car idle a few minutes before pulling out on a cold start. It normally helps the car overall feel better..

I drive off after about 30 seconds. I live in the back section of my neighborhood and it's 1 mile to reach the main road with six stop signs along the way. The blue light goes off by the third stop sign. I also notice the CVT will hang in 5th if it's not up to normal temp because of the enormous 3.25 gallons of transmission fluid in this little car. My AWD 5.0 V8 Explorer holds 3.5 gallons.

I am getting sick of this bitterly colder than average winter! Seeing 22mpg @ 70mph at -10f tonight. Between the cold, the crap winter blend, and e10 I am seriously down min of 30% mpg.

I am definitely going to try to make a warm air intake because at this point my Buick gets better mpg , and on the Subaru I'm not sure what else I can do.

Look on the bright side, at least if your car starts icing up you don't need to worry about a sudden loss of altitude.

2nd tank of 87E0. Yesterday's fill up came out to 33.5 MPG avg. However, that included a lot of unnecessary idling after the TPMS light illuminated the week before. It took some time to fill the tires, including spare, with my mini compressor with the engine running (tires were down around 10 psi.). Tried with the engine off and the compressor's power demand blew a fuse. So probably left some MPG on the table.

FWIW, the best indicated avg MPG on the dash display after this fill up was a ridiculously hybrid-like 53.7 MPG at equally hybrid-like speeds of 40-45 MPH. And then I took it on the freeway where it plummeted.

I don't really think the intake temp is a big factor. Its probably because of the cold wind that's rushing around the aluminum block, aluminum being a great conductor. Insulating the engine bay is probably youre best bet. But easier said then done.... safely.

I have no real plans Christmas day since all our extended family did it Saturday or Sunday, so that is my plan. Probably will use tin sheeting or something

I have some pics to post a little later from today

idle

60mph, you can see the IAT is slightly warmer than the OAT, but not very much. only my scoop is removed

70mph, this morning, outside temp was colder than this says

i plan to do a lot more scanning in the upcoming days, especially as the temps should be 30-40f warmer than this morning.

Anyone experience that heat wave in the Mid East? NJ here. It got almost to 70 f or so. Nothing you guys don't know already but to see such a stark difference within a day or so was incredible.

Anyway holy cow on difference in mileage. I don't have exact numbers but basically every time I take a trip no matter how short my miles to empty decreases by 10 miles minimum. This is during normal cold operation maybe 30 degrees.

I swear I drove maybe 20 miles and it actually went up by 10 in the warm weather.

This is in reference to 'miles to empty' dash display.

No heatwave here, -20C feels like-28C with the WC factor.

I need a better BT adapter. Mine is flaky. Interesting data for sure.

We got into the high 50's and low 60's here in MA for a short time. My mileage shot right up from low 20's to high 20's! Before that, my gas mileage was the lowest It's ever been and was slowly, but steadily dropping every tank. I think my lowest tank so far was 23 MPG hand calculated.

Will do more testing tonight, and might move it, but at +3f with a 25mph straight crosswind I was seeing intake temps of 37-40f. Will test this for a while and see if there is any kind of improvements
