Presume a CVT car. Hatch, sedan? When was your car produced and what miles are on it? Wow.

It climbed all the way to 490 by the time I got to work today, 57.5 mile trip total averaging at 38.7 MPG.

CVT 5 door. Not sure when my car was produced, took delivery on my car on 4/10/12 and have about 1800 miles on the odometer so far.

I'm not doing anything crazy guys, just "hypermile" driving within reason, no jackrabbit starts and trying to maintain 60 mph on the highway, which is tough to do in the NY tri-state area sometimes.

Here's my new personal best from yesterday:

REPEAT FROM OTHER MILAGE THREAD:

ECU flash with the updates in the TSB were ran on my car today. I can already feel a difference in driveablility. I no longer feel like the car is fighting me when I try to accelerate. I guess I just thought it was "normal" before and that's how CVTs behaved. I can definitely feel less engine braking. Previously on the highway I'd have to paddle shift down to get enough pick up to pass someone quickly. That's no longer needed. I took a few videos this morning of the RPM/accelaration before the update & then a few after. I'll post those tonight after work if I can get them edited.

As far as fuel economy I can't help but think this will show at least some improvement. Won't have numbers until my next fuel-up but from the gauge so far I did notice slight differences. After a short highway trip at 32 MPG on the gauge and once on the city streets, the stop and go didn't pull that # down as quickly as it did before. Previously, with such few miles on the Trip gauge, after a highway run, the city stop & go would pull a figure from 36/38ish down to 22 on the gauge in a short time span. But today, from the 32 on the highway at first, the city streets only pulled that down to 29. The city stop & go feels smoother now too. Too soon to tell, will give this a few tanks & post as I see more numbers.

Hope this helps & I'll try to get vids up tonight.

sounds promising. i am going on a 500 mile round trip from little rock, ar to Pensacola, fl. so i should have 99% highway and 1% freeway at least on one tank. definitely considering that reflash but my trip is this sunday.

Well the fact that you didn't immediately report the update made your car drive like crap, I am twitching my hand over the phone to call the dealer right now

I really wish I had the changes on the 2K+ road trip I just went on. The CVT was really racey on the highway (just resume cruise control when going uphill, the engine can rev to over 5K and the hills aren't even very steep).

I didn't know there was an update until someone posted it here. My dealership actually downloaded the newest software today to update my ECU with. I had to bring it to their attention which is kind of frightening. They get the TSBs & should've known about it IN JANUARY. My friend who's a salesman there said I'm their worst nightmare, the Internet-forum-reading customer pain in their ass. Could care less. The service manager is my point of contact from here on out & he "appreciates my patience." But he's definitely on top of it now.

Make the call!

I just brought my car back from the dealership & they weren't helpful at all. I brought both TSB's to their attention & told them I am having these issues. They drove my car & said it felt normal. Then I took the service manager for a drive when I came back to pick it up. He's like yeah I felt what your talking about with the engine braking. I said why are we still driving around why didn't you fix it. His reply was that that isn't what the TSB was for. He was full of s**t, time to find a new dealership. I'm very interested in seeing your videos of before & after because I want to see if your before is what I'm experiencing. They also said that the TSB's were vin specific & my vin didn't fall within the range. I don't know if that was BS like everything else or if it's true.

When did you take delivery of your car? I got mine in December & the updates were dated in January. Any car produced after that should have the current software. Call SOA & ask about the VINs affected.

I took delivery in March. I would assume that the issues were fixed with taking delivery when I did but I definitely feel like the car has way too much engine braking on down slopes & there's a decent amount of drop off in acceleration after the car hits 40 mph from a stop with the same amount of gas applied. The drop off in acceleration is very common with CVT's once you hit a certain speed & it's probably normal but I wanted to make sure. But when I'm going down a hill and my RPMs jump from 1500RPM to 3500RPM to slow me down it's too excessive & I don't think that's how it should be. I was hoping these TSB's were the answer these issues. I think calling SOA would be a good idea to see if my car would've been affected.

can you check the build date on your car? it's on the door sill area of the driver side.

i haven't had a steep hill yet, but i have tried the hard acceleration thing (relatively speaking) and i can hold 3600ish rpm well past 40mph in mine (built Feb 2012)...but for lower rpms 3k and below, i do sense a sort of tail off in rpms after i cross around 40mph.

ps. took delivery early april on a feb 2012 build car...but i lucked out in a 3.5 week wait so i don't know if my delta between build and delivery is the norm.

I just checked the build date and it's jan '12. I just got off of the phone with SOA and they were extremely helpful. They told me that my car was manufacturered with the new programming dates and all so I'm confident that my car doesn't have these tsb issues. They and the dealer both explained there is a decent break in period and the car needs to learn itself. These issues should subside or at least be less harsh as time goes on. And with your car being manufacturered after mine your all set you'd have the new programming too.

i call my dealer to schedule and appointment for the 3 TSB: TCM, ECM, and key hole. Then I called SOA to try to confirm my car falls within the VIN's affect by the TSB. i didn't get an answer, their tech guys werent there. well i told the guy on the phone that the TSB were released in january and my car was built in november. they said they have to check.

good to know and confirm. hope things settle out for you. i wonder what sort of learning curve and time period our cars have.

as i noted, i haven't had any real issues in driving my car pretty gently so far in the first 850miles. i can't wait to hit my 1k mark to try doing a little more normal stuff like revving it beyond 4k and taking a cruise control highway trip to see what kind of mileage i can get from the car.

key hole? as in the steering column not lining up, or something else?

Yeah, I saw the TSB for that when I had a techinfo subscription. Found the fix amusing... it's basically "go to the hardware store, pick up some round felt self-stick floor protector pads, open up the steering column and stick one here"

Fun stuff. Yet I can't imagine any other solution that is a lot more cost effective beyond redesigning the steering cover. (curious if this is done right in 2013)

If they could pinpoint felt circle locations to fix my few rattles, I'd jump for joy!

That is basically what you do to fix rattles, you insulate the pieces making noise. Even when I installed the remote start kit, it had you wrap the tiewraps I used with foam sticky tape.

That's great! Do you feel it's getting better with the higher miles?

Mine is not broken in yet and I am getting close to 32MPG watching the MPG guage and I am sure once I let it break in completely it will be better, I also swapped the 17" with 18" MOMO GT-R's and the 225/45/18, I drive 50 miles each way 4 days a week to work and back home, so it's mostly highway miles, I have about 1,400 miles on her now. I had her now for about a month or so. Very satisfied so far, it appears to be getting better with the higher mileage, tranny is a lot quieter CVT is weird. Remember guys it has to be synthetic oil @ 3,000 miles as per the owners manual.

Default video as promised

Here's a link to the video.... trying to get up 60mph, not a 0 to 60 test by any means, but a rapid acceleration just to specify. After the update, RPMs still drop, but differently. Before the update, they'd drop down to around 1500 RPM right at 40mph and I'd have to give the car more gas to continue accelerating. After the update, they drop down at 50mph instead but only to about 2500 RPM allowing me to still keep accelerating without leveling off or having to give it more gas.

This may seem marginal, but the most improvement I can note is in engine braking. That's VERY noticeable to me. Also, coming off the stops in the city from one stop sign to the next, this doesn't seem like as much "work" for the engine and my city #s aren't pulling down my average MPG like they were previously.

Hope this helps.
