That's great! Just out of curiosity, was that according to the trip computer or calculation? CVT or 5 Speed?

The Impreza is a four door sedan with a cvt. The mpg is the trip computer number.

I took my first longish road trip in my ISM Sport this weekend. From SEA to PDX roundtrip. 377 total miles, 95% freeway miles. Trip computer had it at 51 mph avg and 33 MPG. Hand calculated = 31.6 MPG. It's the best MPG I have ever seen for a tank on my ISM but obviously I would expect that with an all highway trip! This is my second highway trip with the car (the other one was about 240 miles RT) and the MPG was about the same.

I drive in the Seattle area and can fairly easily get 34-35 mpg calculated (36+ gauge) On all freeway, including going over the local passes. I have heard people getting 40mpg on the relatively flat Portland run, assuming you stay at the speed limit, which it sounds like you did. On the other hand my wife reset the meter after getting the 3000 mile oil change, and the meter is showing 15mpg after a couple days of her driving around town. ... 8 miles worth. We are resigned to short hops being BAD gas milage in ANY car. We just have a gauge to notice it now. |

I'll see what the "fuel consumption test" they are doing to my car on Wednesday at the dealer (at the suggestion of the SOA regional manager) turns up although I'm not holding my breath! |

For those asking on the previous page. I usually drive between 65-75, depending on traffic flow. 15 of the 16 miles of my commute is on the highway.
I just finished another tank at 26.4 mpg. I feel like, even by 1000 miles, I should be doing considerably better than that. |

How fast do you accelerate? Do you watch the ECO gauge? Is your A/C on? Stop and go traffic?

Right foot is the key. When I drive my Sport I easily get 5 MPG more than when my son drives it - he likes to get up to speed as fast as possible (>5k RPMs).

Agreed. I've started using the ECO meter as a kind of game. I know if the needle is above the half-way mark, then my average MPGs are actively increasing. Keeping the needle above the half-way mark gets more and more challenging as your average MPG number goes up. It's kind of fun!

Interesting, I have heard both sides. Some say that accelerating slowly is the most fuel efficient. Some say that you want to get up to speed quickly then cruise for the best gas mileage. I have been pondering this thought for a while now.

Sure, accelerate faster to save gas. BOGUS.
Not for a 5 speed, I think they were talking about the CVT to get it to lock up sooner. |

i have wondered about this for a while, but here is one thing i've noticed:
since babying the car and trying to optimize mileage early on, i have been a bit more spirited in my acceleration, and i've seen a slight drop in mileage around town. so i think for my CVT (without any hard evidence), i think that gentler acceleration yields better mileage. yet, i do tend to use the ECO gauge from time to time to play a game while cruising and trying to keep my speeds steady. |

Sometimes I use the cruise control to accelerate, like resetting it after it cancels when making a turn. I noticed it accelerates much smoother and at lower RPMs than I'm able to do manually.

I am wondering how you all are breaking 30 mpg I have a 75 mile round trip commute. It is 80% hwy and the best i have been able to get is an avg. of 28.4 according to the car and 26.954 calculated by me. I get on the hwy set the cruse and let the car do the work. Im not accelerating fast or anything. Are you cars completly stock or have you put a better air filter ect. on? Any help would be Great Thanks

is your drive really hilly? are you using A/C? when was your car built? if you haven't followed this thread closely, you may have missed the often discussed TSBs which require the dealer to reprogram a couple of things in some the earlier cars built in 2011 or so... |

No I haven't followed closely I just found this tread today. My impreza was made 1/12 so I will Check on the TSBs. I have tried setting the cruise control at 65 and at the speed limit of 70 and i get the same mpg. My drive does have quite a few large hills but with close to equal flats I tried using the eco meter to get better mpgs on the the hills but found it close to the cruise after a tank of fuel so went back to the cruise thanks.

Interstate driving at 65-75 MPH gets me 28-32 MPG, and driving the two-lane at 45-55 MPH gets me 40-42 MPG, currently up to 1400 miles on the car. A/C costs me 1-2 MPG, it appears. Worst drops in MPG occur in city driving (traffic light to traffic light) and on quick accelerations. I've been watching the RPM's, fuel economy needle, and the instantaneous MPG display to try to adjust my driving habits to get better gas mileage more of the time. The CVT definitely changes how you need to drive... not like the traditional AT where the shift points are fairly consistent.

Just over 1000 miles on the car. 180 miles of highway cruising. 34.6 mpg, according to trip computer. |
