Oh no, i accelerate pretty quick, just have an 82 mile/day commute. 40 seems to be the max for on ramps, back end feels like it wants to slide out faster than that. Need to get that bigger sway bar

Oh ok, I averaged ~29.5 today on a mostly highway trip of 150 miles or so. Kind of disappointed... but I was going 75mph and as others have found, Anything over 65 will kill gas mileage.

depending on wind i have been seeing anywhere from 27-35mpg @ 75mph. it gets better the more miles I have on the car. but in reality the car's rated mileage is at 60 or 65mph so getting 30ish above that isn't bad, especially for an AWD (manual in my case)

E85 sucks. I think if I really tried I could get 30/31. Right now it's at 28.2 with 75% of the miles being highway miles...

My running average on Fuelly is 30.7. I have 2600 miles on the car now, and have the manual tranny. Since I bought the car in early June, I don't have any cold weather tanks factored into my running average, so I expect my average to decrease come winter.

However, the engine continues to break in. And I plan on switching my tranny and differential fluids to Amsoil Severe Gear (75W90) over the next month or so, which I hear will improve MPGs too.

Yeah I wish I could, guess it could be something I'd look into. Unfortunately there wouldn't be that much in terms of cost savings (unless you do it for other reasons?) since my right foot is a little heavy anyways..

With every other car I've owned non ethanol has yielded 10% better economy. Doesn't cost much more either so it pays for itself

First rule of turbos, boosted runs rich. You must stay out of boost. That includes running at higher speeds, that will build boost, or put the engine in an area of operation where Subie runs it rich to cool it down. Use low revs. In my Talon, I could run WOT at 2000-2500 without building boost. I still got decent accel. You might need to run below that rpm, or at small throttle at those low rpms.

Lastly, drive slow if you're really serious. I gained 5 mpg when driving 50 & 60 instead of 55 and 65 mph.

Just an update on my 5-speed sport premium, I've had 4 fill-ups so far. On two tanks that were 80-90% highway driving I averaged right at 28mpg, the last two have been mixed city/hwy (more city) and I'm running low 25mpg. To be fair, some of it has been quick acceleration as I was still in the engine break-in window on the car so I've been mixing the slow acceleration and fast acceleration while keeping it under 4K rpm consistently per the manual. Varying speed constantly as well. I'm now over the 1K mark on the car so I'll likely change the oil soon to get a fresh start and see how it goes from there.

been a while since I posted in this thread.....about to roll 18K on my Impreze Limited HB....easily averaging 31-32 MPG now a tank on my 104 mile round trip commute, with average speed of 45-50 MPH...about 15 miles stop and go, about 60 miles two lane state hwy averaging 40-55 depending on traffic, and the rest is hwy spd of 70-75 MPH.....running shell regular gas, auto, running the AC most days.......all stock. Probably one of the higher mile Imprezas for the moment......

break in period was at least 10K....saw an increase after the 7500 mile oil change and a slight increase after 10K....and has leveled out now...after my 15K oil change.....

'12 sport limited. Picked up the car new last weekend and had first fill up today. Quick math shows about 29.5 mpg. Driving primarily my commute which breaks down to about a quarter rural hilly driving, a half highway at 70mph cruise (+ -) and a quarter urban stop and go. Full disclosure I have been driving with an eye (foot?) towards fuel economy and gentle break in, but I haven't taken that strategy to any extremes.

That's nice, but short distances like that are fairly meaningless. It could have been primarily downhill over that 55 miles. Let me know if you can average 44 mpg over a 300 mile tank. Then I'll be impressed.

I'd be impressed if someone came in and said they got 36 over a full tank! I thought I'd come close - over 300 miles and the gauge read 35.7. fat chance that was anywhere close, actual calculated was 32.2. I figured it would still be decent around 1.5mpg under the computer calculated number, but it wasn't even close!

My best (hand calculated) tank, on a highway road trip, was 34.5 MPG. The display said 36 MPG.

I was actually quite pleased with this because:
  • I was running the A/C the whole time,
  • I had two adult passengers and luggage for three people in the car, and
  • I only had 1k miles on the odometer, so the engine wasn't fully broken in yet.

Did you adjust for odometer error? They seen to be averaging 3-5% low

Well, my last two tanks have been 36.6 and 36.1mpg calculated. On the 36.6 the car said 38.?? and the second tank I thought I was doing really good because the car was at 40.2mpg on the display. Both were about 385 miles on the tank and I had about 3 bars showing yet onthe gauge.

To give you an idea on my commute, its interstate in downtown St Paul and then north on 35E and 694. Then a mile or 2 of city streets on either end. Yes its mostly interstate roads, but traffic can suck, so there is stop and go and construction on the route. One day had almost 5 minutes where I put the car in park.

The first tank had lots of AC useage. The second tank i tried using the AC as little as possible. I thought it made a big difference until I did the calcualtions.

Current tank seems to be in the ball park of another 36+ mpg.

63xx miles on the car and no I'm not figuring in the odometer error, and I believe there is some, so my mpg could be slightly higher. Its 10% ethanol gas and I'm driving with the flow of traffic and not the slow guy behind the semi (like some Prius drivers).

So far I've had 3 tanks over 36 and the worst was about 32mpg.

JD, you should load your data into Fuelly. I'd like to see it plotted like that.

Here's mine so far:

http://www.fuelly.com/driver/sgoldste01/impreza

If you look at the data for all 2012 Imprezas, I'm above average. But I suspect your data would crush mine:

Do you drive mostly city or highway? Do you accelerate swiftly or leisurely? Do you drive at the posted speed limit or do you speed? Are your tires properly inflated? Do you use quality gas? Do you drive in a lot hilly areas? Do you zero your trip odometer with each fill-up and then pay attention to your ECO meter, doing your best to keep the needle above the center line?

This string of questions will help you figure out how some Impreza owners get above 30 MPGs, and will help you determine what you can change about your driving style. And the answer might be "There's nothing I can do because all of my driving is in the city", in which case that's the end of the story right there (although you can still improve your numbers).
