You think 27 mpg is bad for 80 mph? At that speed, I would expect a sub-30 mpg average.

i wouldnt as long as you werent changing speed. cruise control on typical highway grades i would guess 33 mpg for 80% hywy trip.

My commute each way is about 5 miles of suburban road, and 37 miles of highway. Very little traffic for about 27 of those miles, so I'm neither drafting or weaving. I was not using cruise control either, and I wasn't changing speed much.

I was averaging 29.5 while doing 70 mph on the highway. I'm going to take it down to 65 for a few tanks.

At 65 mph, it should take roughly 34 minutes to do the 37 miles.
At 80 mph, it should take roughly 27.5 minutes to do the 37 miles.

I can leave the house 7 minutes earlier if it will save me some cash.

The EPA tests cars at what, 55mph? 80mph is significantly higher than that, so I would expect mpg's to drop well below 30 as well. Just to be expected.

I've had my Impreza since January and have put about 4500 miles on the car so far. My commute to work is about 8-9 miles one way and it's all surface streets, no highway. If I drive conservatively I average about 29.5-30 mpg. When I don't drive as conservatively, I think the lowest I've seen was just under 28mpg.

I think the biggest factors for me have been outside air temp, engine temp, type of fuel (ethanol based vs. not), outside wind direction, terrain and traffic. All of those seem to play into the mpg factor.

He's averaging 44 MPH. This video is a lie. Notice that there is no tenths column in the number. What a jackarse.

Didn't think to check my tires this morning before going to work. My gas mileage sucked this morning big time, but not just due to underinflated tires they was also 3"of slush i was plowing though and a 40mph headwind. Was getting 23mpg at 55mph.

Tonight with a 15mph tailwind i was only getting 28mpg at 75, which i know is low. Car was also sluggish in the handling department. When i got home after my 41 mile commute u checked my tires and they were all below 30, the front were down 6, while the back were down 5. Overinflating didn't seem to help much but underinflated site makes a big impact!

So what would you say is the ideal psi to inflate your tires to for a balance between handling (driveability) and mileage?

I like 34/32. 38/36 was loose feeling and 32/30 feels mushy

Stevehnm isn't saying (and he'll correct me if I'm wrong) that the Impreza should necessarily meet or beat its EPA's estimates. He's saying that if the Impreza can't meet or beat its EPA's estimates, then the Corolla (which he says has the same EPA estimate as the Impreza) shouldn't meet or beat the EPA's estimates either.

It's a good question. He owns a Corolla and an Impreza. They both have the same EPA estimates. Why can't he get the same real-world fuel economy from both? Your answer should not be "Because the Impreza is an AWD car", because if that's the excuse, then my follow-up question will be "Then how did the Impreza manage to achieve the same EPA estimate as the front-wheel drive Corolla?"

Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining about my Impreza's fuel economy. I'm simply explaining how people seem to be misinterpreting Stevehnm's legitimate question.
First off, approaching 10k miles I average 34.5 mpg without trying much (drive 60-70), and I've hit 38 mpg over a full tank of gas "grannying" for nearly 500 miles mixed driving, so I'm ho-hum about the EPA estimate arguments. To the point above though, how about this: Cd for the 2004 Corolla is .30, . Cd for the 2012 Impreza is .31/.33 (4d/5d). (Hey out there, are the sedans getting better mpg's than the hatches??)

Drag on the car increases by the square of speed (says Wikipedia), not linear. So, the faster you go the more the effect of the drag difference is amplified. If you like to drive faster than EPA uses for estimates, you could expect to to see the lower drag car get better mileage than the higher Cd car all else being equal. Sort of makes sense to me, but I have to leave the math to others. Interesting post on efficiency in this forum at
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...5&postcount=14, don't know if he's right - says power required increases by ^3 with speed..

I use 35/33 cold inflation pressure, after driving less than two miles to the gas station's air pump.

Crappy. Averages are supposed to be low 60's, instead we got snow yesterday. Thankfully it is all gone and next week should be back towards average

My normal commute is 12 miles each direction, all highway with hills and sometimes windy. I lock the cruise control at 70 mph and average 26 mpg.

This weekend, I took a 120 mile trip each direction. Again locked the cruise control at 70 mph. I estimated that I was on my way to 32 mpg but Fuelly shows I only managed 28 mpg!

I ride my motorcycle half the time for my commute. I can get 40 mpg like everybody else with my bike. I don't think the problem is my route, I think it's my Impreza. The low MPG is very disappointing to me.

Even after airing up my tires i was only managing 23mpg this morning again at 81mph into a 30mph headwind. So i guess that isn't bad as the car was seeing a combined 110mph wind, but still. Temp was 31f

that is why your fuel economy was so poor.

Took a long time to see that too, maybe 18 miles to get everything warmed upi think.

I used to see around 26-27 at the same speed but not as much wind and not as cold

im sure type of impreza makes a difference too. MT vs cvt, sedan vs hatch. MT has 50/50 power split besides having only 5 gear ratios. cvt isnt always a 50/50 power split. These differences plus C_d apparently being different could add up. More reasons im happy with my decision.

After my first 380 miles, about 70% highway, 30% city, my average is 30.1. Very pleased!
