Not sure but I think I had a tail wind on the way out and head wind on the way back. Mostly flat, not major elevation changes in Iowa lol.

Mine is the CVT, 9k miles, so it should definitely be broken in. And we weren't loaded, two people and stuff for the weekend is all.

My odometer error is approximately 2.5% under reporting - but what is the point when tanks can be as much as 10% off? I'm just about to hit 10000 miles with the car, and am rarely within 1mpg whether I were to account for the odometer discrepancy or not. Check for yourself, here is my fuelly page (all notes include tank average speeds and mpg according to the trip computer - last tank read 28.8 and actual was 27.7, average speed 34mph):

https://www.fuelly.com/driver/pxpaulx/impreza

Besides, regardless of how far off the actual vs computer mpg is off, this car simply doesn't live up to the MPG expectations. And if you think that I must drive hard and could never hope to get anywhere close to the highway mpg because I probably have a lead foot, well, take a look at our fiat fuelly page:

I might have the dealer adjust the trip computer to have it more accurately depict the MPGs. Does anyone know what the increments are for adjustments?

I don't think so. This is my 3rd Subaru, they have all been hard/impossible to reach the EPA ratings. The Hondas my family have owned have not been.

The EPA rating system is made for comparative analysis at the consumer level, it is most definitely not supposed to be apples to oranges. Subaru gamed it on this one, sad to see.

Just yesterday, I made a conscious decision that goes against my data-collecting nature. I've decided to stop tracking and calculating fuel economy. And it's not because I've been unable to reach the advertised numbers. I've calculated 36 MPG on several extended road trips, and my car's overall fuel economy was 31 MPG.

I just decided that it's not worth the time, and ultimately detracts from my ability to enjoy the car. I know that I can eek out decent fuel economy with this car, but it requires such dedication and concentration, all the while stealing enjoyment from the drive and arriving at my destination considerably later when on an extended road trip.

It's just not worth it. If I wanted to be so anal about my fuel economy, I wouldn't have purchased an AWD car. I would have gotten a Prius or a Fit or a Leaf (or a VW TDI like I used to own, except that I've sworn off the VW brand for the rest of my life).

So from this point forward I intend to drive my Impreza in a normal fashion. I'm not going to drive it like I stole it, nor will I try to hypermile it or drive it like a grandma. I've cancelled my Fuely account. I've switched my numeric fuel economy display to instead show my range before empty.

Will I pay a little more in gas? Yes. I don't care. Even if I get 29 mpg, I'm still more fuel efficient than probably 80% of the cars on the road.

Good for you man. Enjoy the car. I drive "normal" in city driving and local freeway. But trips of more than 100 miles which about every three weeks do I ever hyper mile.

I don't think owning the 5MT precludes getting good mileage.

My Impreza is a 5MT and my trip computer shows an average of 37.5 mpg over the last ~1,000 miles of mixed driving. The trip computer is suspected to overestimate mpgs by 2-3 mpg, so let's say I've been getting 34 mpg.

That's one mpg better than the EPA estimate for highway driving and six mpg better than the combined estimate.

My estimate it that the difference between being careful of my fuel economy and ignoring it entirely is about $10.00-15.00 a month. Not really enough to worry about, but the multifunction display is always there and I find it hard to ignore.

I turned off the gauge and stopped tracking it about 4 months ago when I figured out that my normal driving yielded an average of 28-29 mpg (calculated) / 30-31 mpg (center console display).

Now I only turn on the gauge occasionally (or when I drive on the highway sometimes, resetting it and then watching the number because it is always impressive at 65mph on cruise)

I don't thrash the car or ride up the rpm's much, and I don't really try to hypermile. I just drive it.

When the display was lit I really didn't change my driving style at all, same for the gauge under the speedo. I don't use it or need it.

The only change to my driving style I did with this car is I coast in gear a little longer now (instead of neutral), which was discussed here a long time ago and is now second nature.

I deleted Fuelly because I got sick of updating it. I am already tracking my fuel mpg on my iPhone using Gas Cubby, which I also use to keep track of maintenance for my car, and my wifes.

my car is indicating 30.0mpg for lifetime mpg on trip B, and my fuelly is showing 29.1mpg http://www.fuelly.com/driver/flyboy1100/impreza
it was closer but my 2nd to last tank was really low and it dropped the fuelly numbers. but over the last few tanks i have been averaging 29.8mpg so for lifetime the readout is pretty accurate but there are way too many variables for tank to tank calculations

Default About 31 mpg mountain roads

Just got back from a trip from Ithaca, NY to Northern NJ yesterday. Car still has under 5K miles on the odometer, wife just does a short commute to work everyday. It's a very hilly run. On flat country roads, the Impreza does get about 36 mpg if you stay under 60mph or 2000 rpm. When I hit the hills, the diplay actually went as high as 41 mpg on initial downhill runs. But, the gas mileage really dips when you go pass 65mph and we started climbs. So, the speed on this car really makes a significant difference in mileage along with the terrain. I think my normally geared A/T show less differences with regards to speed and terrain, but the Impreza still wins despite the swings in mileage.

Default Hitting the published numbers for 2012 Impreza Sport Premium

At 4,935 miles, my avg MPG is 30.6; max MPG 35.9 (hwy with 4 adults at 65 mph on Baltimore to DC corridor round trip); and min MPG is 27.7 in city driving. Most of my mileage is in southern PA farm country so not many stop lights but definitely hilly. I drive normal and use cruise control when possible -- as I do with other cars. I save a heavy foot for when I drive my 2006 Mustang GT for fun.

My CVT is hovering around the 30/31MPG mark with ~8K on the clock.

My wife's 2011 Outback with 30k on the clock hits or exceeds the EPA 29MPG and the two cars do the same mix of driving on the same roads...

My girlfriends 2010 Jetta 2.5 just got 300 miles on a half tank of gas driving on the highway. I only got 210 out of my impreza on the highway for a half tank.

This is meaningless. If you want to compare the fuel economy, tell us what you come up with after hand-calculating the MPGs in both these cars after your next fill-up.

The last 1/2 on the jetta goes really fast, i know we have one. The gauge on the impreza is slightly better balanced.

On average i am getting 2mpg better than our jetta 2.5 with a 5sp
