I monitored the water temperature via the Scangauge as the engine heated up this morning. When the interior of the vehicle was cold (at first) the engine would in fact slowly cool at stop lights. However, when the interior warmed up the Scangauge consistently read 182 to 184 deg F.
Makes sense. There's less of a heat demand when the interior is already warm.

Try idling from a cold start with heat on high in fresh air mode. The interior will take forever to warm up and the engine might not get past 130F until you drive it.

Around town, I usually score anywhere from 25 to 29, typically averaging 27.

When I'm on the interstate on cruise control, I average about 35 or 36. If I work at it, I can get 38, though.

filled up today, got some interesting numbers i think, didn't really drive much different than I had been, and on 89 octane w/ ethanol I believe. I never get 89 and I never get ethanol so it was a test.

30.9mpg over 209.9miles and 6.8gallons. computer indicated 31.5mpg and average speed of 57mph.

on my way home my mpg wasn't as great, averaged 72mph, and when i pulled in the driveway i was showing 30.3mpg. had a 7-10mph headwind though so it was to be expected i guess

I've had a 2012 Sport Premium w/ the CVT transmission since August of this year and have yet to break the 3k mile mark. I mostly drive it ~15 miles in a day to work or school, or both in same day (they are close to each other).
It's mostly city driving, with a couple miles of highway mixed in. My avg. MPG is 24 per tank and avg. MPH works out to around 25. Depending how well I can control myself on the highway.
However, I've taken it on a couple mountain biking adventures, which requires a lot more highway/country road driving and if I recall correctly, I got 32 MPG out of her in a weekend. I was happy with it, but was hoping for the 36 mpg that I saw on the sticker when I got the car..

Dont give up hope! Your car is still a baby. I can avg 38-40 on my highway commute (more recently 36-38 during winter) odo reading 16.5k miles. Remember coasting is your friend. lol

^^ This. Plus driving in mountainous areas will bring your MPGs down, as will driving around with a bike or two mounted onto your roof.

What mpg did you used to get on 87 octane in comparison? You used to get 87 pure gas w/o ethanol? It's rare to find that kind of gas in the US.

been averaging 28.7 lifetime on 87 w/o ethanol. i just found it interesting that my mpg went up on that last fill from what i had been seeing. could have been wind or something else affecting it too. i filled again at the same station so we will see this tank.

Took my first road trip in 13 cvt. Was actually shocked to find I got 38 mpg, all highways miles. Went 373 miles and had a quarter tank left, pump clicked at 9.8 gallons. Average speed was 67mph and the MFD read 35mpg. I double checked my math and it came out the same. No A/C, no cruise control.

Great news! What part of the country are you in? (Checking to see if you have winter blended gas, or any ethanol added in like e10.) What trim of Impreza do you have? Base? Premium? Limited? Sport? Hatch or sedan?

Here's mine: (2013 Sport Limited on winter blend with about 40 degree high temperatures)

Showing in the car 28.2 MPG. (Probably closer to 26-27 hand calculated I'm sure but it's still breaking in with under 600 miles on the clock and this is more than 60% city driving and in traffic!)

If your results are repeatable, then 89 gas has better cost per mile than 87. Around here 89 is only about 10c more per gallon.

Around here they are always the same price, unless you can get ethanol free 87, then that is 5-10 more.

How can that be? Why would anyone buy 87 octane when they can buy 89 octane for the same price?

I filled up at quick trip in north ga so not sure if they have switched to winter blend. I have a sport premium hatch that now has 900 on the clock. The pump did not have the contains up to 10% ethanol sticker, but who knows if it still did. Tires were bumped up to 42psi all the way around. Was driving for mileage except for a few burst to 4k rpm to break in. I was shocked when I saw this number to be honest. I was happy at 35mpg of the mfd, I thought maybe the pump didn't fill all the way but when I got in the car the fuel gauge read full. I'm trying to find ways to rationalize this number!

Nice. That doesnt seem impossible. With over inflated tires and highway roads, your rolling resistance was probably considerably lower than average.

Ethanol is subsidised, if you want straight fuel they make you pay more for it. Been that way here for the last 5-6 years, and add long as I have been driving 87/89 always cost the same (11yrs)

In MN 10% ethanol has been mandated for years, can't even buy gas without it unless you buy premium, which isn't worth it.

I usually fill up at Sinclair stations which have 87/89 for the same price, but I have never noticed any measurable difference in MPG between the two.

In my research, high octane doesn't = better, and there is no reason to use higher octane even if it is the same price, unless you have knocking. But in some areas an 89 octane will only contain 5% ethanol instead of 10%, which could maybe make a difference in mpg.

If 89 was the same price as 87 in NY, I'd buy 89. My 1999 Civic with 135k miles knocks now, so I put 89 in it to help control that.

That makes sense where the premium is ethanol-free. The 89 gas just a mix of regular and premium, isn't it?
