The whole "doing nothing" notion is kind of irrelevant. It's not like a K&N really does a whole lot in the scheme of things either..

On the 2012 Impreza page of cars101 under the "What is PZEV?", I assume this HC Absorption filter refers to #1:

1. A charcoal canister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't just evaporate.

2. Fuel injectors that close tighter when they're not in use.

3. A finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of its precious metal.

4. The engine's electronic brain is tuned to run the hot at start up to help the catalytic converter heat up so it can start doing its job faster.

My build date is Nov 2011 and my car is not PZEV but I have this HC filter on my air box. Makes me wonder about #2-4, do I have or don't have?

Anyone have tips or hints on installing a lightweight crank pulley on an auto? Unlike manual, i cant put it into 5th and just hulk smash a breaker bar to loosen the bolt holding the stock pulley.

i saw online where people jam a breaker bar and turn the engine over, but that seems very risky of damage, and doesnt really solve the issue when i need to torque back on the bolt to specs.

That cranking technique is actually very common, just dont let it run. But an air impact gun would help take it right off. Depending on how strong and tall you are, use a 1/2 inch breaker bar and a long pipe and give it a hardy yank, again that will only work for a handful of enthusiast who also happen to like to get "swoll". didn't work for my 140 lbs frame. i only have experience with honda motors, but if it is anything like them, the motor just doesn't want to spin freely when it is off, it takes quite a bit of effort to make it spin. but regarding to putting it back on, yeah......hopefully someone chimes in.

So you don't have this inside your air cleaner box?

I wonder if they had the initial run of these cars be half and half.. Such as, some experimented with the PZEV equipment to see how it worked out, without labeling them as such? Then the following years it'd come standard on all produced.. That would be one of the only logical explanations to that.. Aside from iffy QC at the factory. haha OR possibly it being made in late '11, you think maybe they had a shortage of parts in shipment from that whole natural-disaster thing that hit Japan? Dunno.. I know when I got my '11 Si there was a shortage of them for a little due to that..

This is unlikely. It's my understanding that certain states (NY, CA, others) mandate PZEV, and I'm sure Subaru needed to get their emissions regulatory ducks in a row before they could sell the Impreza in those states.

Nope. Just the air filter, honestly, that is the first time i actually saw one. I have only seen diagrams and heard people talk about it.

You know, your hypothesis doesn't sound to far fetch. Back in early '12, The PZEV model was only standard in California and optional everywhere else (stateside). It became the national standard in April 2012. So not really the "following years", more like following months. Since his was built in late 11 and the PZEV was pretty much optional, I could see how there could have been a shortage on the "standard" parts and a surplus on the PZEV parts.

Well, I called my dealership and asked them if the VIN could identify a car being PZEV. I gave them the last 8 and I now stand corrected. This STAR(?) report they looked at shows my car is PZEV! I'm going to look at my window sticker when I get home later. I don't recall anything showing it was.

Truth. So possibly they made so many based on the state regulated ones they'd sell, then they made some extras incase someone ordered one that way in the first year.. Thus explaining why some did and some didn't in the first year..

I can't recall what was on my windows. I had them tinted 3 days after I got the car and they did peel something off. Just don't remember what it said.

I did not have a PZEV emblem on the hatch. I have the Sport, so it had the decal under the wiper instead..

My 2012 Sport Premium hatch has the PZEV window sticker under the wiper arm, but doesn't have the silver PZEV piece on the metalwork.

Well, those pics are what I could muster from cars101.com and not from experience.

Wow! Those stickers are on the outside. Something is amiss then 'cause I didn't have any of those on the back.
