Default Perrin Short Shift Adapter review

So I broke down and ordered it already, and took about 20 minutes to install.

It is by far the best aftermarket upgrade I have done so far. Easy install, and instantly takes up most of the slack in the shift lever. Shifts feel much more solid, and, of course, shorter throws.

I set it at 55mm right in the middle of the recommended range (I think they recommend installing the adapter between 48-62mm). To be safe I bent up the plate to prevent the linkage from hitting, which will come in handy because now that I know what is involved to adjust it I will probably go back in when it is warmer and set it closer to the shortest throw.

Bushings will have to wait for warmer weather as well.

oh in that case the perrin short shift adapter rocks hard, if you have a 5 speed buy one post haste, it is easy to install and make the transmission feel so much better.

I think either white or grey stars would look neutral enough. Unless you want them to really pop

Basically vinyl with the stars overlaid on top (not one piece but a base with the die cut stars stuck on top).

It needs to be warmer outside before I put them on, I'm thinking I will only do the rear because the reflective stars are not going to show up at night with the headlights on, but on the rear they should glow a bit. Maybe once the rear is on I will like it and do the front as well.
Be sure to post some pictures then.
I want to pick up a set but can't seem to decide on the color.

After driving to work with the shortened throw and stiffer shift lever I can't figure out why Subaru doesn't just install a lever with the pivot point higher to begin with. It really improves the feel of the shift lever a lot, and really would not cost anything additional because they just need to throw the different lever on instead of the stock one they use now (same amount of material, just redesign with a higher pivot point).

Do any drivers actually prefer the more wishy-washy lever feel that the car currently ships with?

Thats an interesting question. I wonder how many people are in a similar situation as myself. I find the stock feel to be quite nice and short, though my last car was also a 95 Cherokee which felt like rowing a boat.

Comments like yours do make me think about buying one of the kits...

I would say theyre cool to add, but these in particular seem overpriced. Ive seen a couple sites where you can customize colors and get it for about $20 shipped.

Btw i got the "i"-badge emblem overlay with spark silver logo on flat black background. i am probably getting another one soon and i was thinking white gloss stars on gloss black background. btw i have p-diped grill on dgm.

EDIT: heres a link for overlays with free shipping

Would you happen to have the URLs to a couple of those sites or the one you ordered from? Yeah they seemed pretty pricey for something that simple. I'm sure you posted pictures up of your emblem a couple pages back, if not could you post some?

What will the stiffer bushings offer as an improvement? I only say that because it feels good as is, no longer wishy-washy, the throw length is good, and overall I am pretty damn impressed that the little adapter can change the character of the transmission so dramatically.

I may do the bushings, if they are not a PITA, but then again, I might not bother. I recall someone on the forum discussing installing then removing the bushings, because he felt they would stiffen it up too much and increase the wear on the transmission (instead of letting the gear lever have a little play in it).

There is still play, but not nearly as much. Makes it very notchy

Yeah I really enjoy the clunkyness of the shifter after the bushings. Stock is nice and easy and smooth but the clunk makes it feel much more sturdy. With the lower shift knob I removed the rubber boot because it made the leather sit funky but it is much louder without. May reinstall it if im not feeling too lazy

What color is your overlay? Is it carbon fiber paired with silver or is it spark silver? I quite like the combination you got going there.

So today I received my Cobb Adjustable short shifter and Kartboy front and rear shifter bushings...I went ahead and installed the short shifter myself which took about 2 hours because I was playing around to find the perfect setup. It was an easy install and the difference is tremendous. I took the Impreza for a spin and it really felt great. Shifts were crisp and short...People here were right when they say it should be the first upgrade you do. Bushings to come soon.

Also I installed a the OEM roof rack from Subaru, which I plasti-dipped black.

Nice! I'm still saving to get a short shift kit with that exact combo of shifter and bushings.
