Default in cabin smell

I'm just curious to see if someone can help me. I can't tell if it is exhaust fumes or if it's just bad air from maybe the heater. maybe bad cabin filter but when I have the heat on it's kind of like a musty smell I'm just nervous to make sure I'm not inhaling exhaust fumes. I've had the car for over a year it's a 2002 Bug eye. The smell doesn't make me dizzy or nauseous or anything like that. Im not smart or handy wih cars just looking for help.i want to make sure im not killing myself with whatever it is.

Definitely do it. There's some threads on 'how to'. A bunch of bolts around the glovebox.

You can either buy a subaru one, an aftermarket, or cut up a home depot/lowes filter for a home AC unit and make a bunch for cheap.

Im hoping thats the problem and its not been bad fumes from the engine. My gf said it makes her car sick but im fine paranoid its exhaust now. I hope its just the filter. Car has 160k im sure the filter is bad either way.

Where are you located? Also, what model / year is your car. You should fill out your profile.

Anyway, what I was going to suggest is maybe you're got a lot of moisture in the carpets. I was looking for your location to make an assumption based on where you live. I live in a snowy climate. I was having a funky smell in my car for a while. When it was warm outside, even more so. It was due to having a lot of water under my drivers side floor mat, carpet and padding was saturated.

Check there, and see it's it's wet. You might have to pull it up to suck out the majority of the wetness with a wet/dry shop vac. Then aim a good fan at it, and dry it out.

The smell is gone, and now that I know what to check for, I hope to keep on top of it.

From what I gathered, it's wet from a combination of snow and ice melting, coming in on my shoes, and a missing firewall grommet/plug directly behind the pedals. I will have to look in my parts car, and rob that plug. As for the carpets...

I peeled up the drivers side and shop-vac'd out a lot of water from the insulation pad.

I propped up the carpet and put some towels under them, to catch the water as it ran out.

I added a box fan to the mix and air circulating made quick work of drying it out.
