Default DIY - 15 Minute 02/03 ‘Bug Eye’ Impreza Headlight Blackout!

We know there are a lot of you out there who would like the look of blacked out headlights, but don't have the time/desire/will to take your headlights out of the car, put them in the oven, split them apart, paint, re-assemble, and re-install. So we have come up with another option - and here is the DIY with step by step photos. Enjoy.

Start by thoroughly cleaning both the headlight lens and your hands. Wet the headlight down with water (a plant mister works great).

Carefully remove eyelid from the backing paper using the built in handling tab and mist down with water. The tab portion goes on the outside of the vehicle. Line the top third of the piece up with the near horizontal chrome contour line and gently lay it on the lens.

Gently feel for the alignment of the edges. The top should be about 1/16” from the edge of the lens (chrome portion covered) and each side should be equidistant from the edge.

While the piece is sitting on the water you can gently reposition – the bottom (long horizontal section) of the piece will be flat to the lens while the top ‘sits up a bit’.

When it is aligned, re-wet the surface of the piece, start at the inside corner and gently squeegee. Then drag the squeegee across to the outside along the horizontal bottom edge.

Verify positioning and gently lift and reposition if necessary. When set, go over the squeegeed area once more using a bit more pressure. Now re-wet the piece again, both underneath and on top. Working in short overlapping strokes, squeegee up to the top – working from one side to the other taking small bites until the entire piece is down and smooth. This method distributes the material across the compound curve at the top of the lens.

Now line up the bottom outside portion of the piece with the outside of the headlight housing

Gently squeegee the outside edge.

Repeat with more pressure when you are sure it is line up correctly.

Finish off by squeegeeing into the center of the kit in short strokes – just like you did on the top portion.

Let the kit sit for 10-15 minutes and then carefully trim off the handling tabs with a sharp x-acto knife. It is important to just cut about halfway through or so – don’t jab it in and cut into the light housing…

Agreed here... but only 6 months

Definitely a good alternative and a whole lot less time to do it

Thanks, we launched these two weeks ago for the local people and they were a big hit! Sorry, we don't offer red film though.
