The 12's have a ecu reflash for this issue. I had mine performed last year and the temp gauge is acting normal since.

I asked about this several months ago, and nothing was around for the '13-'14 even though the problem persists in those MY.

It hasnt become a big enough PITA to put my car back to stock and take it in. Even though we all know its irrelevant, the service manager wants the car stock to "avoid warranty disputes".

Its whatever at this point

Got a call about 3 hours after my she dukes appointment (left the car at 7AM, appointment around 9, called about 12:30) stating what the CEL was for. Derp, I told you what it was an told they tested everything but it was within spec -_-

Sadly get ready for more BS. Its all within spec? Then why the hell has the light come and gone almost a year now. Hope they do something for you, my only local dealer is as useless as tits on a Bull

I'm prepared for it. I came from a honda (Acura RSX) that was bolt-on rattle like a damn monkey cage with every other light on the dash blinking and flickering. I bought the WRX so I wouldn't have to mod it to be "fast" and could enjoy it as is. Now a mystery light comes on? I'm just going to document it every time it comes on and every time I take it to get my oil changed (free for 3 years, 36k) I'll bring it up and have them check it. That way if anything does go and they try and say it was my negligence I can point to the multiple times this has happened and how it could be a defect that caused XXX to happen and should be covered by warranty.

The dealer is 15 minutes from work and on the way home. I have no issue leaving it there for a day and having them take all day to look at it.

This appears to be a pretty relevant thread to post this in.

My temp gauge is also fluctuating, kind of similarly to some of the people in here, but it has an odd twist to it. While driving, it does not fluctuate at all except for sometimes sitting just a tad below NOT and then eventually moving up.

The real problem occurs when I let it idle for 3-5 minutes (i.e. sitting in a parking lot jacking with my phone). The entire time it sits, the temp gauge stays rock steady, however as SOON as the wheels start rotating, the temp gauge starts to jump up. There seems to be a direct correlation between the wheels moving and the gauge moving, so if I stop, the rising seems to stop. It usually tops out around the 3/4 mark or a little above. Once it gets there, it makes it way back down to normal in a minute or less.

For the record: New, larger Mishimoto radiator with new hoses and a new thermostat was installed back in October. This also has starting occurring just within the last week. The gauge worked completely normal before that. Finally, it has jumped up a bit while driving once, but I was beating on it a bit in a parking lot with the A/C on while it was about 110 so it's kind of understandable, but still kind of questionable with the bigger rad.

I'm thinking it is something electrical. I know somebody that works at a shop that's going to drive it to work and monitor it with a OBDII reader, but I'd just thought I'd post up here and see if there's any insight to be gained beforehand.

Yea who knows man, but electrical is my guess. Mine still bounces around and idles rough at times. Other times she drives like a dream.

Not sure if I posted this already, but the problem in my car ended up being in the wiring harness. If you grab the collection of wires there and jerk it around slightly, you'll see your temp needle go crazy. This correlates with the needle usually moving only while the car itself is moving, jostling up and down as you hit bumps at just the right angles to annoy the wiring connection.

My dealer re-soddered the connection and that made it hold steady for a few months, before it slowly wore down and returned to its original, bizzare behavior. Sometimes it goes weeks without moving, other times it gets very sensitive to the car's overall motion. It's just a bad connection. I can't figure out why it's rocket science to get that one particular connection correct, but it appears to be. Maybe it's amperage based, and when the connection is weak less amperage gets through? Who knows. I'm not an EE.

But, try it yourself and you will clearly see where the problem is.

Yeah i did read that and it was helpful. I played with the harness and most of the grounds on the car.....so far its been no light for about 2 weeks and no crazy bouncing of the temp gauge. That is the longest it has gone in over a year....probably just jinxed myself but whatever.

So mine is still prominent. If I reset the ECU by removing + battery, it comes on right after I shut it off and turn it back on. In relation to Morty, I went searching and found this post:

where a few people reference the engine harness ground wire not making sufficient contact resulting in a short. One has soldered it himself, the others have either had Subaru replace it, or resolder it. Going to check it out myself this weekend and see if I can crack open the harness a bit to see if it's making sufficient contact or not. If I can't find anything, I'll at least point it out to Subaru next time I'm in and have them look at it.

EDIT: Also noticed my temp needle fluctuating slightly from between above mid, below, then back normal but CEL's were not found and the only error code ever stored was P0451. The above link and engine harness seems to have fixed peoples issues with P0451, P0300 and P0301 - P0304

That sucks man keep us updated. I have gone the longest without a CEL. Randomly this occured after leaving the battery unplugged over night.

Makes no sense and perhaps random but I dont care at this point. Week 3 no issues

Bumping this thread. Anyone find any fixes for this? My temp needle has been moving from operating temp to the next bar down on on the gauge. It happens randomly and when it does the car runs like crap. It bucks and hesitates and then the needle moves back and the car drives fine. Recently it has moved and stayed in the low position for extended periods (5-10 minutes). I have had the car into the dealer several times now without them being able to duplicate the problem. Its happening more frequently and making the car very hard to drive. FYI 2011 Sedan with 55k miles, only a catback exhaust. Coolant levels are normal and the car never overheats. It almost seems like the temp swing brings the car into warmup and dumps too much fuel. Just seeing if anyone has found any TSB's or fixes. Thanks!

There is an ecu reflash available for my12 that addresses this issue. Call your local service depths give them the vin and see what they say.

I'm the original thread publisher. I've seen many people have this exact problem over the years with 2011 models (I posted this years ago). For some people, ECU flash works.... but personally I think that's just a coincidence.

Under the hood, you'll find a harness with a ton of wires bundled together and a plastic box that snaps in and out. One of those wires is the temp gauge wire. If you have a mechanic wiggle this bundle of wires while you sit inside, you'll see the temp gauge go crazy, like the signal is coming and going completely. It shouldn't do that if the wire is properly connected.

Sometimes my car goes months with no problems. Then I'll hit a bump, or accelerate just right, and it'll start bouncing around again, till it clears up.

I've had mechanics re-seat my temp wire several times. It always works perfectly for a while after this, but given enough time (and I think heat....) it inevitably starts happening again.

I think it's a design flaw in their wire harness, in the end. Subaru has never commented on it.

Has anyone who had the temperature needle problem experience any problems with their tach needle. My temperature problem just seemed to solved itself over time but now when ever I get into boost the tach needle fluctuate quite a bit. I've already swap to a Sti cluster to rule out the stock gauge so that's now it.
