Question WRX 2008/ Head gasket/Head

How does one blow a head gasket? I never over heated my WRX. I did have a intermittent problem with the fans coming on high and the temp gage moving from normal position to slightly hotter, but never in the hot zone. The technician pulled the heads because it did not pass the head gasket pressure test. The heads did not have any noticeable cracks. They were sent out for detailed inspection. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
