Default Dodge Challenger replaced by Barracuda

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/09/c...ith-barracuda/

Quote:
the Barracuda will ride on a new smaller and lighter platform that's more fit to compete with the likes of the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. The vehicle's bones will likely be shared with Alfa Romeo, which means a turbo four-cylinder may show up behind the Barracuda headlights as well as a fire-breathing V8. MT suggests the design may pull from the original fastback Barracuda, though a notch-back version would allow Chrysler to more effectively compete against the drop-top hardware from Ford and Chevrolet.

Unless they resurrect the Plymouth brand for this, it's sort of like calling it a Chevrolet Firebird.

^^^The original Dart was basically the same, based on by some accounts, as the Plymouth Valiant. So in a circular kind of way it works. Still be a bit weird though. I wonder if it will be converted to RWD to counter the Code 130/140 GM has showed recently?

^^ Very much the same under the sheetmetal, having worked on a few.

Younger buyers don't have much connection to Plymouth either unless they had a Breeze, Neon or hand-me-down K-car.

I could care less about the name or what Chrysler variant it once belonged to, to me the important part is a domestic car company downsizing a next gen vehicle. Its a step in the right direction.

I don't know. I love the name Barracuda for a muscle car. Hell it even has it's own song.

When one nostalgic name is used up resurrect another. Heaven forbid you do anything different and innovative, then again, we are talking about Dodge here.

Smaller lighter platform but still having a V8
Sounds like a good idea whatever name they feel like putting on the fender.

It would be difficult for the next Challenger to be heavier.

Well the Neon was a Dodge and a Plymouth... I suppose the Barracuda could do the same...

But, there were also talks about making SRT it's own brand, (http://www.insideline.com/dodge/2013...odge-name.html) and there's been some speculation that the Barracuda could also be launched under that brand. Which seems to make sense... why have a whole separate brand for just the Viper?

Heh..

Why won't they let the famous icon rest in peace? Of course chrysler has to resurrect it from the dead and slap some silly SRT badge on an overweight chassis which will end up costing way more than their competitors.

All companies like to reuse names. They spend money making the name recognizable and I have no problem with them reusing the name. If they do it poorly they dilute the name and it loses value for them. Harley did that for awhile. Eventually they will either need to make something memorable or the name will once again have no value. I understand how this might make someone sad who has good memories of previous names, but as a business practice I don't find fault.

Is Dodge capable of coming up with a new name for a vehicle?

I dont really like the idea of resurrecting a classic then replacing it with another just seems like an odd thing to do. But then again so is having a line up of cars being all resurrected cars from the past. What do we got the avenger, the charger, the dart and the challenger which will be replaced by the barracuda. I think its time to leave the past where it belongs in the past and move on.

I can't wait until 40 years from now when Dodge comes out with a cutting edge new model using the resurrected name "Grand Caravan"

40 years from now Acura will resurrect the Legend and Integra, while Toyota will have a Supra, and Honda will bring back the Prelude. And we'll all be the old suckers waiting in line to overpay for them

2015 SRT Barracuda could be a Mustang killer

Quote:
The SRT Barracuda is reported to be on its way as a 2015 model, but there is new information from Car and Driver, that the new musclecar could be replacing the Dodge Challenger. It was thought that the two cars from Chrysler could co-exist in the lineup, but that may not be the case. The decision to drop the Challenger won’t be based on just sales alone, but will more likely the result of meeting the ever-tightening CAFE standards. The car is just too big and may get axed from the lineup.

The 2015 SRT Barracuda will be much smaller than the current Dodge Challenger. And it’s likely that Chrysler is looking at the new global 2015 Ford Mustang, and looking for a model in their lineup that will be able to compete with the new ponycar. With fuel-economy an issue, and the fact that both the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro will be getting four-cylinder versions, Chrysler now owned by Fiat, needs to take a serious look at the global market.

C & D is reporting that Fiat has been looking for a rear-drive platform for use by their Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and possibly Maserati holdings. They have been eyeing Chrysler to help them develop a new platform and it looks like the 2015 Barracuda will be “its first fruit.”

Look for the 2015 SRT Barracuda to be six-inches shorter in wheelbase and close to eight inches shorter in overall length. Rear track and overall width are reported to be also shrinking by two inches. And the new Cuda will weight up to 300 pounds less than the heavier Challenger. The suspension will look a lot more like the new global Mustang with the front suspension getting a strut setup; the rear suspension will be multilink, with new geometry.

The new 2015 SRT Cuda’s will also offer a number of engine choices to possibly compete with the new 2015 Mustang. The base model could get a 2.4-liter four-cylinder from the Dodge Dart, possibly with forced induction. There could also be an award-winning Pentastar V6 offering with direct-injection used in the new Barracuda. And the SRT Cuda would have to be motivated by a Hemi V8, but it’s unsure if both the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 will be offered.

It will be interesting to see if Fiat has plans to take the new 2015 SRT Barracuda overseas to compete globally with the 2015 Ford Mustang. Even if they don’t, it will surely be a big hit here in the U.S.
