Default Cold weather noises '11

On very cold mornings, 5F or colder, a get a screeching noise from the turbo area. It is not the 2nd air pump starting (although thats there too). It is MUCH louder than that. It sounds like a bad bearing type squeal.
The sound goes away after the motor warms up, or if I rev to about 3k.
Once the car gets warmed up, everything sounds normal.

2 things have recently changed. This is the first time the car has seen these types of temps. I also changed my oil to Rotella 5w40.

Ideas? It will be seeing the dealer in about a week, but they wont beable to replicate it.

Does it maybe sound like a belt squeal? My car makes that sound around -20 celsius. Only when it's very cold, and only for about 1 or 2 minutes.

Exact same thing on my 2011. It's been down to -30C this past week where I live in Canada and this car just screems with that high pitch noise. Glad to know it's somewhat common and my engine isn't about to self destruct...

Its not a belt squeal, but it is about as loud. Much less rubbery, more metal/metal contact sounding. Its also coming from the back left of the engine bay, same corner as the turbo.

Once the engine is semi-warm it goes away while under power (not necessarily under boost) but will make its noise again when the gas is let off.

Makes me thing the rotella is too thick when cold and the oil pressure under 2k isnt enough. The turbo is being starved of oil. But its still only a 5w...

Mine does it too. Very loud only squeals for like a second if that. It's done it since I had bought it. Only happens in extreme cold just like you. No idea what it is though.

My 2012 does the same thing when very cold. Glad I'm not the only one.

My 08 does it too. And always has when its under about 5 degrees. It sounds to me like a very cold power steering pump. (Like an "eeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr" sort of cross between a band saw and vacuum cleaner.) Goes away within about 10 seconds of being started.

Is this the cold start noise everyone is referring to? This happens to my 2011 WRX after sitting overnight if it's below -20C. This occurs whether I use a block heater or not. The whining appears to last longer the colder it is. So is this something that I should bring to the attention of the dealer, or should I consider this as "normal" for Subarus and not worry about it?

My power steering sounds exactly like that in the mornings if its below 40. It gets better after about 5 minutes of driving

I get the exact same noise (11WRX). It only seems to happen when the temp is below 32F (it has been in the single digits here in CO at night). I only hear the noise during the first few minutes of driving on a cold engine. I freaked out the first few times I heard it, but IMO it is normal. Honestly, it took me awhile to get used to all of the different noises this car makes lol.

5 minutes of driving . And I was worried about the couple of seconds of noise on my car, lol. I guess I have a more cold weather friendly WRX than most.

My cold weather noises differ from the warm weather noises I was accustomed too. Now I've come to expect it to sound like a ship in the middle of the Bering sea ice pack on cold mornings. Screeches, whines, you name it. Interior pieces rattling, body work and suspension pieces break free from ice and and make cracking noises. I'd like to think it gives the car character, it also causes my car problem hypochondriac side to go absolutely ape*****.
