cvt and moon roof

whats a good place to start for a basic exhaust set up to give it a throatier sound and wont hurt MPG. A slight performance boost would be nice, but not necessary.

I wouldn't expect any gains from an exhaust on a NA subie. If there is its not much. I'm not sure what options are available on the '12. I have a nameless performance axleback exhaust on my car ('09 2.5i) and absolutely love it. I know they make stuff for the 11's but not sure about the '12s. You could email them and ask

from what ive read an axle-back exhaust would be the way to go. somewhat cheap and will get that sound.

Going to be hard to get a true subie sound with equal length headers. Although I do have a very throaty rumble with my car. Not sure what new ones sound like since '12 has a new motor

i cant guarantee the 2012 will ever have the same Subaru sound that you are accustomed to. If i were you I would look online at all different companies that make mufflers. Pick out one that you like. Then go to a place like meinke and get a 2.5 in mandrel bent cat back exhaust and add the muffler that you bought to it. That will give you somewhat of the sound you should be looking for. I wouldnt expect much gains with this at all or even iof you bought a cat back that was made for the car.

Any muffler shop can custom make you a axle back or catback exhaust.

Yeah I was thinking of that too but would it be as good as an aftermarket one design and performance wise? At least I'll know for sure it will fit.

jparker070 did you bolt on an aftermarket muffler/exhaust to your subie?

Hard too be certain. Depends on the welder. Go to a reputable shop. I'd expect them to take their time and get the bends right.

Performance wise would probably be the same, especially on an n/a car, if you asked for the same diameter piping as a similar aftermarket name brand. I'm no expert, i just remember a Sentra se-r dyno day almost 10 yrs ago when those with cheap custom magnaflows and those with expensive stromungs got same hp gain results. Which was minimal at best.

No i did not. I went from a 2003 bmw 330xi to the 2012 impreza for the gas mileage. I am probably saving a week worth of gas a month, so i wanted to get a commuter car. I am going to leave this car stock and honestly I wouldn't mind keeping this car for 20 years. I honestly like this car better than the bmw, but hopefully i can get a WRX in the next few years also.

What are your goals with this exhaust? Let me know and I will give you some pointers I have seen done.

Well I just want something that brings out the boxer engine sound more without it being loud and I would like it not to drone for trips on the highway. I would like to have some hp and torque gains even if it is minimal at best. Nothing rice that's for sure. Nothing too demanding I hope. What are your thoughts?

There is this thread where apexracer unbolts his muffler, I think that sounds nice.

First let me say that i would put on a couple thousand miles before modifying anything. Yes you can definitely unbolt a muffler. Will it sound loud yes, i dont know how nice it will be though.
I would look at various companies that produce mufflers, they usually have soundbites online. That is a cheap and easy way to get a sound. For some more hp i would get the catback exhaust. I would not buy a premade one from online(unless it was a good price) because you can get one made for not a lot of money. As long as the pipes are bent smoothly and are the same diameter as the online exhausts you should be ok.

Since this is a car based on fuel economy you might be able to squeeze out more hp than usual. The exhaust might be restrictive. To see max hp I would do a full exhaust with no cats. Yes you will have emission problems, but you will pick up alot more horsepower. I have read in a lot of places a while back that cats can rob around 10 hp.

Its going to be hard to replicate the wrx sound. They are different engines and one isnt even turbo. I had a friend who tried to duplicate a mustang GT's sound. He had a v6 stang and dumped in a good amount of money on the full exhaust(headers and no cats) and it still didnt even sound close. Just try and be realistic with the expectations that's all.

Okay thanks that makes sense, so it would be better and cheaper to buy a muffler of my choice and go to a good muffler shop and get them to fabricate me an exhaust. I've been mainly looking at axle back and cat back exhausts and aftermarket ones don't come cheap, so I like your suggestions.

Just make sure you tell them to give you a Mandrell bent cat back exhaust. 2.5 inch piping.

If you also want a little more noise and power. I will stress the word little lol. Remove your airbox and replace it just with a K&N cone filter.

I was surprised at the high quality look of the stock exhaust. I think its stainless all the way to the muffler, then the ass end is galvanized or coated. After the warranty, I may replace just the muffler. I'd just throw a $15 "turbo" muffler on there. I definitely wouldnt spend a lot on it.

Haha more like negligible power gains, I ordered a K&N Apollo Universal Closed Air Intake System for cheap, I'm going to attempt to make it fit.

What would I be looking at price-wise for an exhaust like that?

Yeah I've read and heard that the parts on the Impreza are high quality, for example the stock air intake is similar if not the same as that on the WRX and STi. What's a $15 "turbo" muffler, you mean like a dynomax? I was thinking something along the lines of magnaflow or flowmaster or something, hmm... I don't know. But the muffler on the Impreza is placed horizontal with the tip at a 90 degree angle. It seems hard to find an exhaust like that.

Magnaflow is a good company. I would stay away from cheap/small companies. Go to a reputable one. Turbo exhausts stay away from. Price will depend on the shop, but $500 i dont think would be unreasonable for a good muffler and pipping.

A good local exhaust shop should charge a bill or so.
The Impreza has three cats. I was scoffed at when i mentioned removing them on this forum.

I would never laugh at you personally for suggesting that. I was wondering how many cats they had. It doesn't sound like pKl would want to remove to them. If he wants the most power that is the way to go( Even get a header when they are made). I wasn't positive on the cost so i figured i would go on the high end to be cautious. Plus he lives in Canada, and i have no idea what the prices are up there.

Also, a high flow cat is an option. I dont think they are worth it, but it is obviously to some people if they still make them.
